Harper's POV:
Warm-ups the second day went well and I did get the same stares as yesterday. Today we were going to split in half and scrimmage each other. We had an uneven number so I was told to hop into the game. Today the field was still dew-covered from last night's rain. The smell fills my nostrils and reminds me of home.
The team I end up being on is luckily the one Jayden is on. I see a familiar face also. It was the cute boy Calum. He came over when he saw me wave at him. He was taller than what I remembered but he still had that smile that did something to me I couldn't explain.
"Hey, Calum." I smile back at him, "Are you ready to hand the other team their asses on a platter by the end of this scrimmage?"
He laughs and I laugh along. It felt so good to laugh with someone. The few days we've been in Australia my dad has been kept to himself and isn't up for any jokes. This means I didn't get to really laugh along with anyone. But Calum looks like he laughs all the time. And not in a bad way.
"Yes! So what position are you going to play?" He asks once we both get our breath.
"I don't know. Whatever is open, I guess. I would say goalie but it looks like the one goalie is already in his position." We look over to see him in his position like stated. I've played goalie for a long time, also forward. There is a long distance in between them, but I have a passion for both.
"We need one more forward!" Just my luck! I smile and step up.
"Ooh. The girl is going to represent the team!" A guy with jet black hair says in a 'typical girly girl' voice. I roll my eyes dramatically and take my position in the empty spot. Beside me is Jayden and guess what? He looks better up close. He gives me a smile and I almost faint. But somehow, I actually don't feel like this is a crush. He's just good looking.
"Hi, I'm Jayden." He says walking closer. I hear more words but don't pay attention to them. All I see is his blue eyes. They look like an endless ocean that I find myself drowning in.
"Oh, I'm Harper." I say once I know he's done speaking. I look to the ground quickly, breaking the trance.
Our conversation comes to an end when someone on our team begins a chant t get the team pumped up. I laugh and turn away but the guy who is doing the chant grabs my shoulders and get's me to jump along with him. I scan my eyes over the team and catch eyes with Calum.
He gives me a sympathetic smile and a shrug as if to say 'I'm sorry'. I give him a 'whatever' look and stick with the chant until it dies out.
My dad blows his whistle, grabbing everyone's attention. "You guys know the rules of football so abide by them. Don't kill each other, it's only the second day, but don't be afraid to show what you got and show effort! Effort effort effort!!!" He blows the whistle, signaling the games beginning.
The other team kicks off and immediately I see an opening and swoop in and steal possession over the ball. I hear some cheers from the players behind me and that only pushes me further. I see the other forward, Alex, opening for the pass. I give it a light tap to him and he takes off. Before he can get far someone on the other team takes it and zooms past me. I turn around and scan the field. More and more people try to get it from them but nobody does until the defense.
The guy who gets it is Calum. I cheer and see a smile cross his face. He takes a large kick towards me and it reaches our line of force perfectly. I pass it to Jayden who swerves around the defender and he passes it back to me. We pass back and forth until the goal is there. I shout for his to take the shot and just as he's about to, I notice a defender running up behind him in his blind spot.
