"They scream the worst things in life come free tonight."
My head was spinning, my eyes couldn't focus, the world was slowly shriveling away from me. To think just this morning was just another normal day. And the last normal one, at that.
All I could think about was how my life was going to end. I squeezed my eyes shut. This is it, I thought. I silently prayed for a quick death, maybe even a painless one, but that was asking for too much. What happened a second later felt like an hour. In that terribly painful span of time; my head made contact with the chair infront of me, making my seatbelt pin against my chest so tightly, blood stained my shirt moments later, all while shattered glass entered my body. Pain shot through my whole body immediately. Quickly, my world shifted to an unmistakable black. And my last thought was, At least the pain will be gone. The pain will be gone...
***
"Adriana."
"Adriana." Someone was calling my name. It wasn't important enough though because I didn't move. And maybe it was because of the fact I really, actually couldn't. Or maybe it was that, deep down, I knew when I woke up things would be far from ok (and I'd wish I never woke up in the first place), knew that death was a better place than Earth for me.
But then I heard that voice again, "Adriana! Please wake up!" and I'd soon regret it, but they just sounded so desperate and helpless, both emotions which I am all too familiar with, that made me hesitantly open my eyes slowly.
Moment later, I looked right into the eyes of the person longing for me; my best friend, Destiny. She stared in shock but not for long, as she pulled me into a suffocating hug. Pain was still a very relevant factor as she crushed my injured ligaments, but I didn't care. I needed this. felt quivering hands on my shoulder, shaking me. My body felt hopelessly heavy, like I was being pushed down underwater. I wanted to find out who would be that worried about me, but I didn't feel like moving; just saying like this, forever. But I knew that's not what would happen. Sooner or later I would have to face reality, and reality is a bitch. Facing my fears wasn't my strongest trait, but that needs to stop now if I wanted to say anywhere near sane.
"Ad-Adriana?" The person stuttered, shocked to see me awake.
When our eyes met, l recognized her immediately, it was my best friend, Destiny. Tears started falling, but l didn't know why.
Suddenly the world came into focus, beeping monitors, me in a thin paper dress, and tubes jammed in my body. I was in a hospital, but why? I tried to remember back but I couldn't think of anything that would bring me here.
And then a terrifying memory hit me.
***
The world was spinning, my eyes dizzy. The horrible sound of tires screeching against the road. My body thrusted forward in a hard, jerking movement. Right before l black out, l hear my sister scream. The cry is soon cut short, and I know she's dead. l hope l die.
***
When l'm finally conscious to reality again, l realize l've been screaming. I clamp my hands over my mouth to squish the sound. There were beads of sweat on my forehead from the vivid thought.
"Adriana, Adriana, are you okay?!" Destiny's shaking me again.
My eyes were stinging, and l felt my throat closing up.
"Des-Destiny" I quivered.
"Yes..." She said cautiously, as if l would burst with simply the wrong word said.
"Wh-What happened to" I gulped. My vision was completely blurred out from the pool of tears forming as I manage to speak out the last part. "... my family."
I winced once the words were out of my mouth, afraid of what she was going to say next. I forced my eyes shut, as if that would have protected me from the truth. Destiny looked around even though no one was there, uncertain if she should answer my question.
"Adriana I'm sorry..."
No. I thought, this can't be happening.
I looked away, the tears falling down faster than before. I covered my ears with my pillow and started a round of hysterical sobs.
"I'm sorry Adriana, I really am but..." She continued, her voice cracking.
I knew the truth, but there was hope. There's always hope.
"your family's gone."
And I lost it.
There's never hope. I'm wrong.
"If we could only have this life for one more day. If we could only turn back time."
