"Celeste, what the hell are we doing?" I asked.
I was seriously enjoying myself with this whole 'vampire' thing, so I decided to go along with Celeste's plans to see her fail. I mean seriously, vampires? She has crossed some sort of looney line.
Anyway, I was now sneaking close behind Celeste, wearing black skinny jeans, a black hoodie, and my black high tops. Celeste was wearing the same thing, with a tuque on her head.
"We are following your friends. I am going to prove to you that they're vampires." Celeste whispered matter of factly.
"Of course. What if they're just sneaking off property to drink some beer or something? I can see that."
"Just shush and keep low."
I rolled my eyes but kept my mouth shut as Celeste continued to follow Bianca, Chad, Dean, and Paris. I shook my head and took out my cell phone, dialing my best friend's number.
"What are you doing?!" Celeste whispered harshly.
"Um, calling Paris? Why don't I just ask her what she's doing?"
"Fine, but be quiet!"
I rolled my eyes again and pressed talk. I watched from a distance as Paris rummaged through her bag in search of her phone. She found it and I suddenly heard her voice through the receiver.
"Hello?"
"Hey Paris! Whatcha up to tonight?"
"Oh, not much. I've got a lot of homework tonight, so I'm staying in. Where are you? It Saturday night, are you at a party in town?"
Okay, she just lied to me. I'm sure she has a reason for not telling me what she's really doing. Right?
"Oh, I'm not doing anything. I was wondering if you wanted to hang out?"
"I can't tonight, Jay. Sorry, but I've really got to catch up on this homework. But we're going shopping tomorrow still, I promise."
"Oh, that's okay. How about I just come over to your room? Bianca won't mind."
I watched her panic and whisper something to the group. They told her something and she put the phone back up to her ear.
"Bianca's pretty beat. I don't think it's a good night for you to come over. I'll see you tomorrow though, right?"
"Uh, ya. Of course. I'll uh, see you tomorrow."
"See ya Jane."
"Bye."
I hung up and watched as Paris and the group continued walking.
"What did she say?" Celeste asked.
"She told me she was doing homework. I don't like it when people keep stuff from me. I'm going to find out what they're hiding. Follow me." I said as I took the lead.
We followed them quite a ways, making sure to keep enough distance so that they didn't see or hear us, but we could see them.
My feet began to hurt and I wanted to turn back, but I kept going. I knew I wanted to find out what they were hiding. I couldn't give up.
Finally, the group stopped. I didn't see anything significant, just a bunch of trees. But then I saw it.
A man was out walking through the forest. He wore a light sweater and looked about 50.
I crept a little closer to the group, until I was within earshot. They were speaking in their normal voices, not whispering or trying to make their voices quieter at all.
"Okay, who's going first?" Bianca asked.
"I'll do it." Paris volunteered.
"You went hunting a few days ago. You missed the assembly, remember?" Chad reminded.
"But I'm hungry." Paris whined.
"Why don't we let D go first? He did take the punch for us when Mandler let out his fury about that Adam kid." Bianca suggested.
"Ya, it seems fair." Chad agreed.
"Plus, it's entertaining to watch. Dean is always so polite about it." Paris said.
"Really? Okay." Dean said with a shrug. He started towards the old man with a big smile on his face.
He talked with the man for a few minutes. I couldn't hear what he was saying because he was too far away, but I watched as Dean held his arms out and started to hug the old man. His smile turned into a smirk and I watched in horror as he bit down on the man's neck. Bianca, Chad, and Paris started cheering and clapping as Dean sucked the life out of the man. My mouth hung open.
Dean dropped the lifeless body and wiped the blood off his face as he returned to the group.
I turned around and started walking back the way I had come without saying a word to Celeste. I was in shock. I couldn't believe this was happening. My brother was a vampire! A dirty, malevolent killer! I kept walking until I was back on school property. That's when everything hit me like a freight train.
"My brother is a vampire." I breathed.
Then, the world went black.
