Jane

She was ecstatic. Jane woke up before everyone, rushing to get ready for the day ahead. It was her first day of school. My God, she couldn't be happier. She couldn't stop thinking about Jack and his story about the rain since the day she met him.

After brushing her teeth in the bathroom she flung through her clothes, looking for the nicest things she owned. She was loud, and that's an understatement. Garrett caught Jane in the act. "For someone who keeps to herself, you sure make a lot of noise."

"O-oh, sorry. D-did I wake you up?" Jane questioned.

"Well, kind of. It's fine," Garrett yawned. And despite his claim of being just fine, he kept yawning every few minutes.

Maybe he wouldn't be so tired if him and Haley would calm their raging hormones, Jane thought.

Still, what was she going to wear? Every single kid screamed "I'm rich," and Jane had not one clue about how to fit in. Most of what she owned were skinny jeans and band tees.

"April?" she called from her room. April sleepily opened her door and joined Jane in her walk-in closet.

"What's up?" she asked.

"I don't know what to wear. I want to look spontaneously gorgeous, but the only impromptu thing I own is a white Sword Art Online t-shirt," Jane whined.

April scanned through Jane's closet. She really didn't own much, but April managed to put an outfit together in her head. She rushed to her bedroom and back to Jane's.

"This seems like it's your style. Not too much, not too shabby either. What do you think?"

Jane took in the outfit. A brown sweater. Black skirt. Cat stockings. Black boot heels. A black sunhat. And a few accessories. She loved it. Everything was dark, and the brown sweater made the whole outfit warmer.

"This is ..." Jane trailed off. Don't be clingy; don't act amazed. "This is good." Jane pushed April out of the room and started to change.

Jane was ready for school and glanced over the outfit one more time. It's pretty, so why do I look so out of place? Jane tried to find what was wrong. Was it the sweater? The cat stockings? She decided to change her skirt to some shorts. That's better.

Jane walked out of her messy, unkept room and walked into the slightly colorful living room and see April and Haley singing the same song as in the car she listened to last week.

"You found me dressed in black," Haley sang and stopped, pointing to April to "take it away."

"Hiding way up at the back. Life had broken my heart into pieces," April continued and  laughed.

Adrian

As Adrian opened his eyes to a blinding, snowy white in the window, he took a minute to adjust to everything. He sat up, exposing his bare chest from under his blanket. Two voices were heard from the living room, both a little shaky but nice at the same time.

And as nice as they sounded, he would have liked to stay in and sleep a little longer. He stepped out of the warm, empty room. The hard, wood floor was cold to the touch, even with his socks on.

"Morning, everyone," Adrian announced to all of his companions in the livingroom.

He almost paid attention to the greetings he earned back, but his scrutiny was caught on the outfit Jane was wearing.

Dear God...

"What are you wearing?" he asked the calmest way he could. She looked different; it wasn't bad. It was cute. And not that she wasn't decent all of the other times, but wow.

"I wanted to look nice for the first day of school, and April let me borrow some of her clothes," Jane explained.

Adrian just nodded, not really sure how to respond to that. "You look beautiful, Jane."

Jane smiled weakly at her big brother, then looked at April. "Ready to go?"

"Sure, we can both get breakfast on the way there. Let's go," April said. And they both were out of the door.

Jane

She pushed through the children just like she did the week before. It wasn't any easier than the last time. In fact, it felt even worse. How?

Thankfully, her day started off and ended with April's class. It was some sort of magical typo on her schedule, but she didn't complain. April's class was her sanctuary.

Jack had found her in the ocean of students.

"Need help?" he asked her, even though she was clearly struggling.

Jane even thought about one of her knives. Not a very safe thought, she knew, but a girl can dream. So she nodded at the "rain" boy and took his hand in hers. She blushed at her sudden action,  but he didn't seem to mind it a bit.

But hey, she got to her first period in mostly one piece. And that's exactly what she needed because lunch... We'll at that point, Jane wasn't so fortunate.

She sat with Jack, of course. The typical conversation you have with a kid who's gone to a school longer than you have.

What's it like here?

Is everyone rich?

How do you survive this place?

And so on.

They had their laughs. Jack asked her questions about herself, but you and I both know now was not the time to tell backstories and secrets. Jane could still barely trust April.

And that's when he came. Him. Of all the accidents that happened in life, he was the most insignificant human being alive, Jane would soon think.

Fabian. He sat down right next to her, a smile on his face that could be a sneer if you brought the other half of his mouth downward with the rest of his smirk.

"So you're the new kid?" he asked. That question can only be good or bad. But knowing that Fabian's no cup of tea... Well you get the idea.

"Go away, Fabian. Your presence is definitely not wanted here," Jack said.

Fabian got disturbingly close to Jane,  waving his voice past her ear saying, "She doesn't seem to have a problem with me. Do you, new kid?"

She was terrified to say the least. Jane didn't say a word.

"See?" Fabian said. He slid away, and the slow motion horror movie scene was finally over. He felt her shaking, but he wouldn't let her know that. Not yet, anyway. "She seemed totally fine."

"Fabian." Jack's warning tone turning threatening. Jane didn't see the point. A guy as nice as Jack had nothing on Fabian.

The guy's hands lifted in surrender. He winked at Jane before he went back to his table full of juvenile delinquents.
