"You know this won't work. It can't happen, Willa. We're just too different."

13 words. Those 13 words were the cause of my currently shattering heart. "How can you say that? We won't know until we try."

He shook his head, already backing away from me. "This-" he pointed between us, "will never work. The sooner you accept it, the sooner you can move on."

I was glad that he wasn't closer, afraid that he might hear the pounding of my heart as it split in two.

"Goodbye, Willa."

With that, he was walking away from me and from the life we could've had. I didn't chase after him, I didn't fall to my knees, I didn't do anything that cliche. Instead, I just stood there, keeping my tears at bay. I wouldn't let him see me weak.

He didn't look back, and while I shouldn't have expected him to, somewhere deep inside, I wanted him to.

"Goodbye..."
