It was a nice afternoon as the Gryffindors filed outside to their first flying lesson. The Slytherins were already there and Ginny saw that her sister and Malfoy were snickering together. She shot them a look they both seemed to shrink a little behind Crabbe and Goyle. Madam Hooch was also out standing between the two rows of brooms. She had short grey hair and had piercing, yellowish, hawklike eyes.
"Okay enough dilly-dally! Stand next to a broom, hold out your arm and yell 'Up!'" She yelled down the line and the Gryffindors scattered to get next to a broom. This made the Slytherins snicker to themselves, but the Gryffindors ignored them.
Ginny stood next to an old broom, so old even she didn't recognize the model. It was chipped all along the broom and the handle had bits of hard plastic sticking out. The tail of the broom had twigs sticking every which way, but when she yelled up the broom flew into her hand neatly. Harry had the same luck she did, and to her dismay, Lucy had gotten her broom up on her second try, it floating up so slowing she was sure it would fall. Hermione wasn't having as much luck, though, as her broom just rolled on the ground. Neville's didn't even move.
"Okay now mount your brooms and on my whistle kick off the ground hard. One- two-" Neville being nervous kicked off before the whistle was lifted to Hooch's lips. He floated higher and higher- ten feet, then twenty- and then he slide off the broom so slowly it seemed slow motion. He hit the ground with a dull thud and a crack and moaned in pain.
"Oh dear! A broken wrist, alright get up c'mon dear. I'm off to take Mr. Longbottom to the hospital wing. Stay exactly where you are or you'll be out of Hogwarts faster than you can say 'Quidditch'" and she left with Neville who was cradling his wrist.
As soon as Neville and Madam Hooch were out of earshot the Slytherins burst into loud laughter.
"It's not funny!" Yelled Pavarti Patil
"Wow Patil didn't know you had a thing for fat idiots!" Pansy Parkinson yelled back and whooped with laughter.
"Hey look! Longbottoms dropped that stupid ball that his gran had gotten him! Maybe I'll leave it where he can get it- like at the top of a tree!" Malfoy called out and mounted his broom laughing.
"Give it here Malfoy." Harry said quietly. Ginny stepped next to Harry and stared at Malfoy who just gulped.
"Come and get it." And he was in the air. Ginny nor Harry didn't hesitate and flew into the air after him.
"Give it Malfoy or we'll knock you off your broom!" Ginny could vaguely hear Hermione shouting about coming back before they were caught. Ginny gripped the front of her broom and dive straight at Malfoy who barely had time to move out of the way.
"Got fetch then." He smirked and threw the remembrall as far as he could. Harry dove down with Ginny and grabbed the remembrall throwing it to her and both landing smoothly on the ground, Ginny holding the remembrall triumphantly over her head. The Gryffindors cheered and Hermione ran to Ginny and Harry frantically asking if they were alright.
"Potter! Weasley!" A sharp voice said. "What- were you-"
"Professor it wasn't their fault!" Pavarti called out.
"Quiet Miss. Patil. Follow me Miss. Weasley, Mr. Potter." Professor McGonagall said as the placed their brooms on the ground and followed her sheepishly.
"But professor-!" Hermione started, but McGonagall was already walking briskly towards the castle. Ginny heart sank so fast she forgot she had the remembrall. She would have to see Neville before she was expelled so her and Harry could give it back. Before she left for inside, she caught Hermione's crestfallen face, and Lucy and Malfoy's triumphant expressions. Maybe when her and Harry were expelled they could stay with Hagrid and be his assistants. The thought of watching all her brothers and Hermione and Lucy become witches and wizards while she was walking Fang made her almost sick.
Professor McGonagall stuck her head inside Quirrel's classroom and said, "May I see Wood for a moment?" And Ginny looked at Harry with wide eyes. Was Wood a cane that she was going to use on them? Harry's expression told her that he was thinking similar.
Wood turned out to be a burly fifth year, who just glanced at Ginny and Harry with intense curiosity. They reached the end of the hall where a deserted room sit. McGonagall let her self inside, screaming at Peeves to get out. When he was gone and the door was shut she announced,
"Wood, I have found you a new seeker and a new Chaser." Ginny's eyes widened and she grabbed Harry's arm excitedly, and Harry looked confused, but could see that Ginny was beyond happy so she could see his face turn excited.
"Really?! How did you figure these two first year out?" Wood asked in disbelief. Ginny remembered Fred saying something about the team needing a new seeker and chaser after two of the best(one being her second oldest brother, Charlie) left last year.
"Naturals both of them! I've never seen anything like it! Was that your first time on a broomstick, either of you?" Ginny froze. Harry nodded his head yes, but Ginny hung her head.
"Er- I've actually flown before with my brothers old brooms, not far or anything, but I've had some practice." Ginny said in a rush, afraid that this new information would change her professor's mind about taking her on the team.
"That's quite alright Weasley. Good to get your practice in. Okay well, Weasley, Potter meet Wood on the field tomorrow night at seven sharp to get an introduction and he'll tell you the schedule then. Oh I'm off to see what I can do about the first year rule and brooms. I can't wait to see the look on Snape's face when we crush Slytherin, I-I mean when he sees we've discovered such raw talent."
McGonagall coughed and straightened her robes and hat and left the room swiftly. As soon as she left and three students burst into laughter and Wood walked the two young Gryffindors to the Great Hall where he took his seat with Fred, George, and what Ginny assumed was the rest of the team. Ginny and Harry sat across from Hermione and told her what had happened.
Her face lit up when she saw they weren't expelled, and she started bouncing in her seat when they told them that they were-
"The youngest players in a century!" Hermione finished having read/memorized Quidditch Through The Ages. Just when they had settled down and started eating, Lucy and Malfoy came over to ruin their good spirits. Crabbe and Goyle stood like the goons they were as Malfoy challenged them to a duel.
"Scared Potter? You do know what a wizard duel is, right?" Malfoy taunted.
"Of course he does! He's Harry Potter after all. I'm his second, whose yours?" Ginny broke in before Harry could answer. Malfoy stood thinking for a moment before he announced Lucy as his second.
"Tonight at midnight, the trophy room as it's almost always unlocked at night. See you there." And with that Malfoy was gone.
