Melissa POV
Two unfamiliar cars are parked outside my house. One I can only assume belongs to the first intruders and the other…
“Hey Max, thanks for the backup in there, huh?” Paul said to a guy I assume is Max.
A man stands in front of a sleek black car, bending down to pet Seymour. My dog wags his entire body at the attention, threatening to ruin the man’s tailored suit with his slobber.
The guy just stared at me while petting my dog. He has black curly short hair, a small nose, small pink lips, a strong chiselled jaw and green eyes that would pull you in his trance by just staring. I felt very uncomfortable looking at this man.His eyes glance over me, disinterested. Quick as a whip, his hand darts down to draw a pistol with a long silencer attached to the end.
“Ah! Don’t-!” the shot is muted, a small pop, and behind me I hear a cry of pain.
“…Looks like you missed one.” The strange sexy looking guy said. Wow his smile is so white; it could blind anyone from afar.
The three of us whirl around to see the last of the intruders sprawled out on my front lawn.
“Oh my gosh!” I was shocked at how many bodies were lying dead on the ground. Surely these cops should call for more backup. I feel so violated in my own home… Well now that it trashed I can’t really call it a home now. I-Is he… as I was thinking these thoughts about this Max guy, Paul smiles at Max “That’s what we pay you for.” He said. Max spoke “I guess someone has to clean up your stragglers.”Paul opens the backseat door for me. Thinking he’s going for a trip, Seymour hops right inside. I stare at him in shock “Seymour, get out of there!” I said trying to sound strict but failing miserably. Max turns to me. “This is your dog? He’s well-trained. Is he coming along?” He asked me.
I stand stock still, refusing to enter. “Will you…promise to explain what’s going on?” I asked them all.
Paul straightens his face to a serious look, “Well, I…” And then, I notice a group of heavily armed men approaching the back of the house. “Okay, I think they had more backup than initially expected!” he spoke.
Uttering a growl of frustration, Leslie kicks out the back of my knees, and sends me sprawling into the backseat.
“Hey!” I yelled at him.
Leslie looks at me with an annoyed expression on his face, “We don’t have time to coddle her.” He said to Paul and Max, who just entered the car with ease.
“Agreed! Let’s go, Max!” Paul says to Max who starts up the car as Paul leaps into the passenger side. Leslie gets into the back seat with me.
His cold eyes pierce right down into my soul. Geez. What crawled up his ass to give me such a look, as if I planned this shit to happen… Definitely no angel, I thought to myself.
Twisting in his seat, Paul grins, a wicked glint in his eye. “Aren’t you glad you came with us, now?” Those men…I hope they don’t tear up the place too much more. “I don’t know if ‘glad’ is the right word.” I say to Paul.
Minutes of tense silence pass us by; Leslie all but ignores me in favour of staring out the window. In the glass reflection I can see his forehead pinching in deep thought. His lips, expressive even when angry, form a tense line.“So…” I say trying to sparking up a conversation; Leslie doesn’t turn to face me. I tried again “So who are you guys?”
“Go on. Take a guess. Who in this town could get away with the things you just saw?” Paul said smiling at me.
OH, no. I didn’t want to believe it. Didn’t even have time to think of what this all could mean. “You’re…you’re with the mob. And the men who attacked my house…”
Paul intervened “Paid the cops to turn a blind eye.”
“Paul…” Max said to him in a warning tone. Max sounds cautious, looking like a dog with hackles up.
“What, you want me to lie to the girl?” he said with a shocked expression on his face.
“You’re making her a witness.” Max says to him with a glim like expression.
“I won’t say anything about this to anyone, if that’s what you’re implying!” I spoke to Max with a determine voice. I can see Max’s grip tighten on the steering wheel, but he stays quiet. “But can someone please, please just tell me what’s going on?”
“Here’s the long and short of it. Your parents have made some powerful enemies.” Leslie spoke.“Mom and Dad?! But they’re not anybody important! There’s no way you have the right people!” I yelled in a shocked face, trembling voice. Scared to believe my parents were on a hit list.
Max looks at me through the mirror, “I’m sure that’s what they want you to think.”
Paul stares at me and spoke too, “They left you to save their own skin.”
Leslie deigns me with a single once-over, eyes scanning me like a jeweller with a new piece. “You’re the only link to them. So that makes you the next vialable target.”
I’m stunned into silence. That’s impossible… I don’t know what to say, what to think. Seymour rests his head on my lap, tail waving slightly. Fighting back tears, I hold him to my chest and bury my face into his fur for the rest of the ride.Paul has an angry expression on his, “Oh great. I hate when girls cry.”
Max just stares at me through the mirror with a sad look on his face.
