I was about 12 when the law was passed. Just learning my magic. It changed everything.
I sat in front of the tv, a seedling sitting in front of me. I was concentrating trying to make it grow. Then music started playing and I looked up. A news cast was inturupting the show. The man on the screen had slicked back greasy hair and was wearing a magenta suit. Even young, I thought it was pretty weird.
"We interrupt this show with an important message. Congress has passed a new law. Magic is now illegal."
My eyes widen and I turn to my dad who had come in. He looked back and just shook his head pointing at the tv-telling me to listen.
"Yes, you heard me right. Magic is no more. That means all forms of magic. From amulets and nick-knacks to hand magic. Anyone caught doing magic will be arrested on sight and taken away. Now back to the show."
The man disappeared and was replaced by the silly kids animation playing earlier. But I wasn't interested in it anymore. I stood up and raced over to my dad. He wrapped his arms around me and I looked up at his face.
"Does this mean I'm going to have to stop learning magic?"
"No. I won't let this stupid law interfere with your teachings. We'll just have to learn a lot more in the one session."
I smile and nod. "Okay!"
He smiled at me and ruffled my hair. "That's my Rory."
My mom was encouraging, although she wasn't completely sure it was a good idea. My dad taught me a lot for about two years. Then one day he went out and didn't come back. I nearly sat up all night waiting. But I knew what had happened. My mom held me close while I cried. Then I sat up and looked her right in the eye.
"Dad provided for us by doing magic. I'll do the same."
"Oh Rory...."
But my resolve was steeled. I wasn't going to change my mind.
