I made myself a sandwich and watched mom clean up. Even though there wasn't anything to really clean.
From the living room music starts to play as another irritating message from Congress gets spread.
I roll my eyes and walk to the couch, biting into my sandwich. Mom follows and leans against the back. We stare at the tv as a man with blonde hair and a sky blue suit appears. I laugh.
"They dress so stupid." Mom merely gives a smile.
"Good afternoon! Beautiful day ain't it? Our top story today-and most important-is the metal armbands. Earlier today police all over the country went to the homes of all registered magicians and placed theses bands on their arms."
A picture of the band appears for a few seconds before cutting back to the man.
"Over the past two years, despite the no magic law, more and more people still practiced it. This led to Congress doing what ever they could to stop it. So they created the band. These pieces of metal prevent the wearer from performing any kind of magic. We can now all rest knowing our country is safe. Now to Jim with the weather."
The video switches to another man but I'm not paying attention anymore. I'm staring at the stupid band.
"This can't be happening."
I stand and point my arm at what's left of my sandwich trying to make it burn. Instead the metal heats up, burning my skin. I immediately stop and hang my head.
Mom comes over and wraps her arms around me. She then pulls away and gives me a smile.
"Looks like you'll have to earn money the old way. A job."
I give a dry laugh.
"Yeah I guess so."
I sit back down and slide my converse on. Mom raises an eyebrow.
"You're going now?"
"When else?"
I plant a kiss on her cheek and head out the door.
Hopefully she didn't see the tears on my cheeks.
