It was peaceful, the smell of the bitter salt and the sound of waves crashing against sharp rocks near the shore was soothing and comforting to Armin's ears. There was a cool breeze tangling through their hair as the sun set, almost as if the ocean was swallowing it.
"We made it, Armin." Jean said in a hushed tone, his voice like silk as his arms tightened around the blond. Their damaged capes had been thrown to the sand dunes bygone, the dull stains of the wine colored blood of comrades splattered across the wings of freedom. Their torn boots layed beside the clothing as well, The teens admiring the way the ocean glistened with the very last lights of day, a smile daring to curve across Jean's lips. Tears stung the edges of Armin's eyes before he parted his lips.
"It's beyond description... It feels as if I'm dreaming. " He stated with a cracking voice.
"I just..." He sighed as Jean Grasped his small palm with his own, their fingertips brushing together before Armin laced their fingers.
"I just wish everyone else would have gotten to experience this." He managed to spit out, swallowing hard as tears dared to pour out. The blond reached into his pocket with his free hand and pulled out four grimy patches with the faded blue on each wing.
"Are you ready to..." He trailed off, Armin taking a minute to respond. "Yes," he replied clearly. Jean loosened his arms around the blond as Armin walked forward to the shoreline and took a deep breath. He had the patches balled in his fist, holding it out before releasing them from his grasp, the wind taking them farther out into the ocean until no longer in sight. Armin cupped his hands over his mouth, no longer competent to hold his tears back. He turned and wrapped his arms around the torso of his partner tightly as he sobbed against it, his salted tears soaking in the fabric of Jean's buttoned shirt.
"It's okay, they're finally at peace now." Said Jean as he hugged the smaller male back.
Armin swallowed hard and looked up at his boyfriend with red, puffy eyes and spoke. "What now?""We can finally begin the future we deserved in the past."
