When my life changed

I vividly recall what had happened to her on April 15, 2003, she was only fifteen years old. It was springtime, a week away from spring break. Rachel was a student at the Mount Joseph Catholic School for girls and her teachers would always say she was a good student. Rachel's parents hardly have any problems with her. Her friends would called her Miss. Silver Spoon because her parents gave her what ever she wanted. We lived in a huge house with the finest furniture. She had everything a girl can want, except the love or affection of her parents and that is what she needed the most. They were always busy working; her dad was a doctor and her mother was a lawyer. I practically raised her myself and loved her as if she was my own child. My nanny Marcia was the sweetest woman I have ever met, she was as gentle as a lamb and her voice was as gentle as a dove. She was a middle-aged latino woman with short brown curly hair and hazel eyes, with an average built, curves as perfect as the letter "S". Yes, she was the best, but I was still longing for the love of my parent. Rachel would do anything to get her parents attention, she tried telling them how she felt and what she needed, but they were too busy to listen. I remembered when she won her first soccer game, it was an excited time for her but as usual her parents weren't there to celebrate with her. It was prom season, and it seems like everyone had a date but me. To my surprise I was asked by John Parker to be his prom date, he was consider to be one of the coolest guys even though he was some what of a geek. I was so excited I couldn't wait to tell my mom when she got home that night.

"Mom," I shouted. I ran to the door to meet her. "Mom, mom you won't believe what happened to me today! One of the coolest guy in school asked me to be his date for the prom," I said excitedly.

"That's amazing honey, I have to buy you a very beautiful dress," mom said.

"Thanks mom," in excitement I replied.

On the day of the prom I called my mom at her office, "Mom where is my prom dress? I know you said you were keeping it as a surprise until the night of the prom."

For a moment I heard no response on the phone, "Mom are you there?" I said.

"Yes I am here, it's just that I forgot to buy your dress, I've been so busy with work. I didn't remember tonight was your prom. I am so sorry honey," she said.

"Mom are you serious, how could you forget? You know how much this meant to me, how could you?" I asked angrily.

"I am so sorry darling," she said.

I did not say another word, I just hanged the phone up and started crying. A few seconds later I heard a knock on my door and it was Marcia. She must have heard me crying from across the hallway.

"What's wrong mami?" she asked.

"My mom forgot to buy my prom dress," I replied.

"Don't you worry, I figured she would have forgotten so I bought you a dress."

She wiped away her tears, walked towards me and gave me a hug and said, "Thank you so much, you're the best. I love you. You're like the mother I never had."

I leaned towards her and kissed her on the forehead and said, "I love you too."

She went to get ready for her date which was in a hour. Shortly after she came downstairs, looking absolutely beautiful in her dress. It was a long blue high neck, sleeveless open back, mermaid tulle dress with crystals all over. I always told her, how beautiful she was. Rachel was tall, slim, curvy with ruby red hair that plunged over her shoulders.

Marcia would always say, "You have a smile that lightens up an entire room."

At her school annual father daughter dance she had to withdrew from taking part, because her father did not show up and at her middle school graduation ceremony, it was just myself and Rachel. Her dad was out of town at a medical conference and her  mom was in court with her client. All my life it was always my nanny and I. We were like best friends, on Friday nights we would paint our nails and watch our favorite movies, we practically go everywhere and do everything together.
