Jackson Avery
"There is nothing medically wrong with her that requires her to stay in the hospital."
"Nothing medically wrong with her! She hasn't talked in weeks, she only eats if your force her to. You mean to tell me there is nothing medically wrong with her?!"
Shepherd was arguing with a board member who wanted us to discharge Payton. The board member kept insisting she was fine, despite multiple doctors telling him otherwise.
"I'm sorry but she is still eating and not talking isn't a medical issue." The board member said.
"She can barely walk on her own! Your telling me you want us to leave a 19 year old girl with a walker to walk around the streets?" I asked him.
"Either you get her out of here by noon tomorrow or I will." The board member said walking out of the meeting room.
"Where is she gonna go?" Hunt asked.
"We don't know any of her family and she's not in our system. We can't just throw her out onto the streets to fend for herself. She attacks anyone that touches her." Shepherd said.
After a couple minutes of silence Meredith leaned down and whispered into Derek's ear.
He stared at her for a second before nodding."She can live in our house. We all work different shifts so someones most always home. Lexie moved out so I have an extra room." Meredith said.
"What's one more person in the frat house?" Callie joked. We all laughed.
"Well then it's settled, Payton's moving in with you guys." Hunt said looking at Meredith and Derek.
•••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••I walked into Payton's room because it was my shift to watch her. She was lying in her normal position, her usual empty stare on her face.
"Good news, were busting you out of here. Your gonna come live with me and Dr Shepherd and Dr Grey and Dr Kepner and Dr Karev. Your leaving in a couple hours when Dr Shepherd finishes his shift." I told her. I started throwing the few things of hers lying around the room into her backpack. I sat in the chair next to her bed and leaned back.
"You know, the way you recovered, it was a miracle. To only take a month and a half to recover from your injuries plus the wrist fracture and overdose, it's a miracle." I said to her. She turned her head so she was facing me.
"You know, all the 1st years are betting on you. Most of them think you still have another month until you finally talk. There's only 2 of them that betted you would talk by the end of the week. We'll see whose right." I said.
I was sitting going over patient files when Dr Shepherd walked in. "I thought you were in surgery?" I asked.
"The patient decided they wanted some more
time to consider the risks of the surgery. So. I'm off early and that means Payton gets to go home early." He said."Okay, well all of her stuff is packed up already. It's over there." I told him, pointing at her backpack. He went over and picked it up.
"Alright, does she have any clothes we could put her in?" He asked.
"Just her bloody clothes from the scene." I told him.
"Guess she's going home in this." He said. He wheeled her wheelchair over to her and I helped her into it. I was surprised she didn't fight me. Shepherd grabbed her backpack and wheeled her down the hall and out of the hospital. Before I could take two steps my pager went off and I ran out of the room.
Derek Shepherd
"Welcome home." I said to Payton, wheeling her through the door and over to the stairs. "Your room is upstairs. I know you haven't gone up this many steps since your accident so it's gonna be hard." I told her. She placed one hand on the stair railing and the other one had a death grip on my arm. She forced her feet up the stairs one by one and eventually we were at the top. I walked her over to her bedroom and she sat down on the bed. I put her backpack on the floor and walked over to open the curtains. I slid the curtains open, the sunlight blinding.
"I'm sorry..."
