The pain coursing through his body burned as he came into contact with the cold, hard floor. His hands were numb from the impact and his feet felt cool and callous. Ten million daggers could have pierced through and he wouldn't have felt it. He gasped and his eyes flew open.
The ache stopped and he felt as if he was dunked into a tub of cold water. He shivered.
His eyes took some time to register his surroundings. Trees were grown along side a grey pathway that was certainly man-made. What was it that brother Ethan called them?
Ah, roads.
It was rough and hard as he walked barefoot. He took a few steps and winced. The rocks were painful to walk on. His eyes lit up and got an idea.
He pictured a pair of shoes sitting in front of him, the ones that mortals usually wear. Soon, the air above the ground shimmered and rippled just like a puddle of water being disturbed.
A pair shoes with laces landed gently in front of him.
He bended down with a smile and took a good look at it. Sneakers. He knew it instantly as its name flashed in his mind.
Tying it tightly, he peeled off his shirt and took a deep breathe. His wings naturally sprang out of his back as he stretched. Closing his eyes, he reached into his mind and imagined a locker and thrusted his shirt into it.
And it was gone.
It was trick brother Ethan taught him just before he left for his first assignment. Silently, he lifted his head up.
"My Lord, please tell me, whom am I protecting?" He whispered to the heavens.
An image of a young lady with soft brown curls entered his mind. She had dark grey eyes that held so much pain and hope that his heart clenched at the sight of this beauty. Her name burned at the back of mind.
Aline Gracia Dawn.
