The final bell rang and I made my way out to the old pickup truck when my phone rang with an unknown number popping on the screen. So I picked up as I began to drive.
"Hello?"
"How was it? Tell me about the statues! Do they actually have a bulldog somewhere?!"
After the shouting, I immediately identified the voice.
"Hi Eli. It was alright, the statues are very gold and very shiny, and I don't think there is an actual bulldog anywhere."
"Damn, that sucks. Take a picture of the statues though please."
"I'm already on the road so that one will just have to wait."
"Ugh, disappointment."
"Sorry, but do you want me to pick up anything to eat?"
He remained silent for a moment before he answered.
"Chinese. But not those nasty chicken dumplings you always get."
"Whatever, I'll take care of it."
"Goodbye Frankster."
"Yeah, yeah."
I tossed my phone in the other seat and say back against the headrest as the air coming in through the windows threw my hair around. San Francisco was not much different from Springfield. Nothing much changed except for the roof over my head and the scenery. We still have the hot air and sunny skies which secretly I had grown to hate. There are some days where I just want to pick up and move to somewhere on the East side of the country. It's all old. I need something new.
I pulled up to the Chinese restaurant instantly smelling the aroma from inside. I've found my way around the town easily, and now Eli and I have a certain flow going on.
Placing my wallet in my hand, I opened the door and stepped inside holding the door for the next person to grab it. The air conditioning seemed to pool around me immediately and so did the aroma of spicy food and egg rolls.
"Hi Lilly." I said to the woman at the front desk whom I had grown oddly close with throughout the last two weeks I've been coming here.
"Ah, Frankie! Nice to see you again! Noodles, two egg rolls, chicken dumplings, and wonton soup?"
"Yup, thank you!" I smiled at her in gratitude.
I walked over to the bench near the exit to wait for my food until my phone rang again.
"Hello?"
"Hi Frankie. It's Meredith. I was just calling you to let you know that the house renovations are going great, and I just wanted to know if you would like to drop by sometime this week to check it out. The outside renovations are nearly finished, but the pipes and mold will still take another week or two then we will be able to start the indoor renovations."
I stayed silent. I didn't think I'd have to speak to her again for awhile or even ever again. Eli had been dealing with things lately. Even if she had needed to contact me, I thought she'd contact Eli.
"Frankie?"
"Yeah, sorry. I'm here. I'll drop by on Thursday after school. Does that work?"
"Sure! That's fantastic! I'll see you then Frankie." She chirped with her perky voice.
"Bye Meredith."
I hung up the phone in pure discomfort. It was just going to be weird to go back to my home.
'It's not your home anymore, Frankie.'
