Chapter 6 - 'One more day'

Toby's POV: The sound of a single letter of the alphabet causes me to see red. "What do you mean -A sent you here?" Spencer wipes her eyes and coughs slightly as she reaches into her back pocket. I watch her pull out her phone and tap the screen with her index finger. My heart begins to race when she shows me the phone screen. 'Hope you have black in your wardrobe. Which sounds more appealing? Your baby's or boyfriend's funeral?' A wave of anger consumes my body and I can sense my blood pressure rising. I'm brought back to earth by a knock at the door. "Ms. Hastings? Are you still going through with your appointment?" the voice through the door questions. I look at Spencer and see tears falling from her face. This is such a shock to me and this surreal situation has blindsided me. I look down at Spencer's shirt and see that her stomach has enlarged. There are so many questions. How long has she known? "Ms. Hastings?" the knocking on the door grows louder. As Spencer begins to speak I gently cover her mouth with my hand. "Tell her no. Please, Spencer. Just give me one day. We need to talk about this." I plead as she looks at the door. She pauses and looks back at me and I know that she senses my fear. Spencer graces my chin with her hand, walks over to the door, and opens it. I can hear her speaking to the nurse as I nervously await her decision. After a seemingly long wait, Spencer looks to me and echoes what I desperately wanted to hear. "Let's go home."
