"Come on, Lei. It's quicker this way." Charlie sighed, shoving her bottom lip out at me in a pouting manner.
"I know, Char, but that road creeps me out enough in broad daylight. No doubt it'd be worse night."
"Please, Lei? For me?" I eyed her through my peripheral, drumming my fingers against the steering wheel in contemplation. I exhaled lightly, turning down the dark road, the slightest trace of a smirk on my face. The change in road was noticeable almost instantly, jerking the truck side to side on it's bumpy terrain.
If I wasn't wrapped around her finger. I glared at her, cursing mentally for giving in to her so quickly.
"Hey, don't glare at me. You know you love me." She threw her hands into the air with a grin, winking at me in a joking manner.
She was pretty, even in the darkness. Her brown hair fell effortlessly down her shoulders, her brown eyes glinting in the dim car lighting.
"You know Tyler's gonna be there tonight, right?" Charlie gazed at me expectantly as I blinked back at her awkwardly.
"Hey! Eyes on the road, I wanna get to this party alive."
"So?" I questioned.
"What do you mean, 'so'? You've had a crush on him since the 6th grade!" I didn't have to look at Charlie to see she'd shifted in her seat, her body now facing toward me. "Plus, his older brother will probably be there too." She raised her eyebrows at me. "He's hot."
"Not that he can compare to yours of course." She murmured, almost inaudibly.
Key word being almost.
"You're disgusting." I stated, shaking my head through her fits of laughter, my eyes studying the gravel road ahead. "What? I'm not wrong." I hit her arm playfully. I couldn't help but laugh. She laughed with me, shifting back to her normal seating position, converse on the dashboard.
Today was Charlie's birthday, and it was still difficult for me to process. I remembered the two us chucking crayons at Ryan Hamill in Mrs. Mulligan's first grade classroom, and pulling on his sister's hair during lunch. -and now, here we are, both seventeen years old and on our way to (yet another) crazy teenage party.
Our laughter was interrupted by a muffled ringing noise from my back pocket. I tried to ignore it and glanced in the rearview mirror instinctively.
"Bet you 5 bucks its mama Liz."
"I'm not giving you 5 bucks."
She chuckled. "There's another side road up here. You can pull over." Charlie suggested, gesturing forward with her pointer finger.
There was one, just as she had said, but how she knew it was there was beyond me.
I pulled over, grabbing my phone from my back pocket.
"Hello?"
"Leia Grace, Where are you?"
"Hi, mum." I sighed, rubbing my eye lazily with my free hand. "I'm going to Amber's party with Charlie. I texted you."
She sighed heavily on the other end.
"Be home by 12:00."
"Yeah, I'm surprised you're awake."
"You can always come home now."
"Got it, mum. I'll be there at 12."
"Be safe, Leia."
"I'm always safe."
"I love you."
"You too."
I dropped the phone in the cup holder, and turned to face Charlie. "What'd the boss say?"
"12."
"You won't be home at 12."
I shrugged, started up the truck, and backed off of the small abandoned road.
"You're gonna be the death of me, Char."
"but you love me." She beamed, nuzzling her head against my shoulder teasingly.
"That, I do."
I turned and smiled at her, my nose crinkling in confusion as a bright light blinded me from behind her.
"Oh my god, Charlie!"
The car crumpled almost instantly with the force of impact, shattering the windshield and showering the inside with pieces of gravel and broken glass. The metal of the car groaned one last time before falling slowly on its side.
My vision grew blurry, ears ringing with the sound of creaking metal. I shuddered against the air bag, before a wave of darkness fell over me, stunning my thoughts.
