F/n: reader's first name
L/n: reader's last name"Hm, Edogawa Ranpo..." You turned the name over and over in your head. You have known him since you were in middle school while he was in high school as the figure of an onii-Sama, the child of a family friend. Since then, you have not met him again. Your vague impression of Ranpo mainly marked on his peculiarity and intelligence. Well, he could also be quite a fun person, you thought, when he was giving fun little deductions of trifling things.
Now that you had graduated university, and were out on the look for a job, only one word could describe your situation: desperate. Being the odd one out and the antisocial girl in school times barely seemed to matter to you, but the disadvantages started standing out once you were out and around in society alone and helpless. You were forced to look towards family connections, and coincidentally, just when you needed one, one showed up, that was---Ranpo. It was such a surprise that it took you an entire minute to recognise his voice through the phone. He never mentioned how he knew that you were looking for a job, but either way, it was Ranpo, he had his own unique ways to know just everything. A scribe's job was being offered to you at the detective agency he worked, and you bounced on your way to your interview ecstatically.
To talk about an interview, well, it really wasn't much of an interview. It was just Ranpo sitting in a cubed little room with whitewashed walls and as empty as a cell besides the table and two chairs in the middle. He sat crouched into the armchair with his head up towards the ceiling and his fingers constantly tapping by the side of the chair. He remained in that way even after you entered and took your seat. In the flash of three seconds, he jolted up, sat straight with a smile of formality yet kind, put on his glasses, then poured you a cup of tea.
"Ah, how you have grown ever so beautiful since middle school, l/n-chan."
"I doubt that you quite remember what I looked like in middle school. Edogawa-San."
"Ranpo-San would be fine, that's what all those people call me."
I nodded.
"So, well, this job, even though it's called a scribe, you're actually, um, my personal assistant, although you do.....scribe.....sometimes." He explained.
"What do I do as your personal assistant?"
"You bring me food from downstairs, tell me what work I need to do everyday, um, yeah drive me around cos I have no idea how to get around actually. And let's see....um there's actually a lot of other stuff I don't remember right now... Oh yes! You go on field investigations with me and that's when you actually do your work as a scribe. Um if you don't mind you can actually um shop for me um and cook and you might have to keep track of my belongings since I always loose them."
"I sound like your housekeeper."
"Which you're going to be, soon enough."
"What!? Since when are you going to hire me as a housekeeper too?"
"Well, if you marry me, then you're pretty much gonna be in charge of the household."
"W-was that a marriage proposal....?" Your world started spinning and nothing in reality seemed to make any sense to you anymore. You searched desperately for a trade of the old Ranpo you knew in the man that sat in front of you, and everything started floating to the surface. Within him hid the boy that you have always admired secretly and would go out of your way on your walks home everyday just to catch a glimpse of or even exchange a word or two with. Childhood feelings never went away, especially in such an age where admiration and fondness was at its purest without any mixture of reality. Did it matter to you anymore, what your feelings for him were in the past?
"Well I've been appointed to marry you by our parents, in case you don't know." He said with an unmoved face. Your fantasy broke.
"And you're going to abide to that? Even though we're both adults now?" Your voice shook with disappointment uncontrollably. You dreaded more than anything to hear him say that it was a joke, and that as a grown up, he would not abide to such foolish promises. Yes, that has got to be coming, you thought.
"The promise wasn't my own will."
Your heart sank. That feeling was accompanied by such an acute sense of agony that you lost all the warmth from your body as if you were ready to faint in any moment. Your heart cried out that it would not hear of it anymore, and urged your ear to shut itself deaf.
"But actually," Ranpo continued. "Through something involuntary, came out my own will. Thanks to our parents I was able to know you, and thanks to this foolish promise, I was able to find such an amazing bride."
"Huh?"
"I do want to marry you, not to keep to some stupid promise, but of my own will."
You have always hated reality and socialising because you preferred to live in your own fantasies of books, movies, and anime, where anything could be achieved through determination and miracles made to happen by pure wish and luck. In reality, not to mention miracles, even coincidences barely happened. Its cruelty suffocated your everyday life as you struggled like a caged bird for an escape.
However, in that moment, you knew the only answer you were going to give was a yes, because Ranpo was the only man that made you believe in miracles in this world again. He made a miracle as touchable and realistic as the chair you sat on.
"Will you marry me?"
"Yes, I will."
