CAMPUS.
Last year was an amazing year with Ty, Brendon, and Mark. Mark and I are the only ones still single. (wink, wink) Jenna is pretty and nice, and Sarah is pretty and funny and nice. Going in this year will be cooler- I just know it.
My parents had already left for work, so I'm alone. I rush out of the house in a white tank top and black shorts, wearing my Taco Bell cap that Tyler got me. I love it.
------
We are all in New York for college (NYU). All I can think about is who my roommate will be.
Mark told me it would be a girl. Tyler says it'll be him again. Brendon hopes it's Jenna. Brendon's weird that way.
Joshua William Dun
Dorm 4a
I stare at the paper for a bit. Tyler's in 4d. Brendon's in 4c. Mark is Brendon's roommate. Jenna is with Sarah in 3b.
Tyler and I don't know who we are with, but we do know that they are strangers.
I stand in front of the dorm. I open the door and I find a girl- a cute girl- holding a lot of bags and fixing her glasses.
I like this girl already.
She doesn't wear any makeup, and she's gorgeous without it. Her glasses are a bit big and she stumbles around. Her black hair is in a messy bun, with green strands of hair falling down in her face. Her skin is tan, and she's a bit shorter than me. When she sees me, she yelps.
"Ah! Oh... Um. Hi," she squeaks. I feel the blood rushing to my face. She's wearing a black tank top that says "NO." in bold, white letters. She holds a sketchbook in her hand. "You must be Josh," she says. "Mark told me about you!" She grins at Mark's name. Did she mean... Mark? My Mark? I have no choice but to smile back. She looks at me and her smile fades. "You don't trust me."
"What?" I ask, startled.
Stupid! My mind tells me.
Shut up, I growl, in my head. The pretty girl shakes her head. She pulls out her phone and gives it to me. I look at the picture she's opened.
It's of Mark and her, laughing at a pool. I feel a pang of jealousy. Mark never told me about this! I smile.
"I know that guy," I say in my best manly voice. "He's one of my closest friends."
Nothing is better than seeing her shy smile. She looks at the floor, muttering words under her breath. Her eyes sparkle. Her hair falls in her face.
Then big ol' Tyler bursts in the room.
"JOSH!" He shouts, and pulls me in a brohug. The girl just stands there. Is she blushing?
Tyler looks at her, then at me. He grins. I give him a don't-you-dare-say-anything-that-might-embarrass-me-in-front-of-this-girl-or-I-will-crush-you look.
Of course, he doesn't listen.
"Hi!" He says, jutting his hand out. "I'm Tyler!" He points at me. Grinning, he says, "That's Josh!"
The girl laughs.
Her laugh reminds me of my drums, how happy they make me feel, and her laugh is like my drums with roses and poppies growing around it. Lovely.
The girl shook his hand. "Deedee (y/n). Pleased to meet you." She then turned away to put her stuff in her room.
Tyler turned to me.
"Dude, you lucked out. I got Jeremy."
Ouch. Jeremy's a jerk. He once threw an apple pie at Tyler for no reason. "Anyway," Tyler continues, "Brendon, Mark and I are going to Taco Bell. Wanna come?"
Before I could answer, Deedee popped out if her room.
"I could make a mean taco," she said. It got Tyler's attention.
"Oh?" He asked, smiling.
"Yup," Deedee grins. She changed her glasses- not as big and clumsy, but sleek and fit. "Whatever you want, I'll give you."
"Could you handle"-Tyler counts on his fingers-"six people?"
"Easy!" She says. She drops her phone by accident. I bend down for it at the same time as her. We bump heads, and she laughs again, rubbing her head, then touching mine. I blush. Too much. Thankfully, she ignores it.
"What time?" She asks Tyler.
"After school. Six."
"Deal!"
Tyler smiles. "Deal!" Then Deedee glances at my cap.
"Oh my god," she gasps, "where did you get that?"
I was just about to answer when Tyler jumps in.
"I got it!"
They chat for a while, and I understand that Tyler has invited her to come meet the squad. I'm cool with that, but I'm afraid that she'll make me look dumb. She's so cool and I'm so... Simple. Basic.
Dumb, my mind says.
"Mm-hmm," I say out loud. Deedee raises her eyebrows. I put my head in my hands.
Then I feel my hat come off my head.
Deedee's holding it, inspecting it. "Wow. This is awesome. And it looks great on Josh-intensifies his eyes. It's wonderful."
I let her words sink in.
And it looks great on Josh.
Yup, this is awesome.
