Lost Love
Four days past nineteen
He was waiting for the bus
In military green.
I was walking by,
Caught his eye
He asked if I would mind
Sitting down
For a while
And talking-
He was feeling a little lonely.
Told me he had no one
To send a letter to-
Would you mind if I sent
Some back here to
You?
The letters came from an
Army camp
From across the sea
In Vietnam.
He told me his fears
And promised his heart-
When things start to get
Rough over here,
I think of that day-
And see your sweet smile.
Don’t worry-
I won’t be able to write
For a while.
I cried
Never going to touch the hand
Of another guy
Too young for him they told me,
Waiting for the love of a
Far-flung
Soldier
This love
Will never end
Waiting for him
To come back again-
Never going to be alone,
The letters said
Soldiers
Coming
Home.
Friday night at
The football game
The anthem played-
Folks bow your heads and pray
For one local
In Vietnam
Dead.
Nobody really cared
But a certain girl
Who just got
There.
