Rudie's POV
Knock knock knock
I waited at the front stoop in my best suit. But even it had a rip on the sleeve and and a few stains.
No answer.
Ding dong
I rung the doorbell and was surprised by its classiness. After a few moments, the grand door to the right opened. A maid with messy red hair stood in the doorway.
"What can I do for you, young man?""Hello, I am looking for Rosemary. I
need to speak with her.""What is your name, young man?" She asked.
"I am Rudie Fäber, Rosemary's friend."
" Oh yes! Rosemary has told me many things about you! come in while I fetch her."
I wondered what Rosemary said about me. "Thank you."
I stood in the hallway on a long dark crimson rug. A large crystal chandler hung above me. The red drapes where drawn back in the parlor adjacent to me. I closed my eyes and breathed in the smell of freshly baked pastries. Hunger gnawed at my stomach. I sighed, envying Rosemary. She had so much while I had so little but I pushed the thought away feeling embarrassed at my jealousy. I had no right to feel that way; her father worked hard to get his family to the financial status they where at. The silence was broken by the voice of a man. He seemed to be frustrated. I peered to my left. A tall handsome, man stood in the office. He was talking on a telephone and sighed, running his fingers through his hair.
"No! That will not work! I have told you time and time again..."
The sound of footsteps made me turn. I saw Rosemary standing in the middle of the spiral staircase. She waved quickly and then walked down the rest of the way.
My heart fluttered in my chest.
"My papa is on the phone, come with me." She whispered. We walked through the wide hall. Pictures hung on each side. Rosemary led me into another parlor. She sat down in a red velvet arm chair.
"Come on, sit. You don't have to stand there stiff as a lamp post." She chuckled.
I nodded and sat on the white Victorian couch. The comfort was beyond anything I have ever known."Well aren't you two the sweetest. I will get you some tea. Do you like scones, dear?" Asked the maid as she pulled back the curtains.
"Yes ma'am." I said enthusiastically. I had only had a scone once before and I've been waiting for the day I could have another.
I smiled at her and looked at Rosemary, who was blushing madly.
"Please excuse, Rosa she is like family, but is a little-"
"I think she's sweet." I grinned at Rosemary. She shook her head slightly and said, "What is it you wanted to discuss?""I think Hitler is taking people and their business for a reason..."
Rosemary nodded wide-eyed. "Didn't you hear his speech yesterday afternoon? He said he wanted to eradicate the entire Jewish population!"
I gasped and shook my head.
"Annalise and I saw the soldiers take a Jewish man from the library."
Honestly I had no idea that it was because they where Jewish, I just didn't want to mention that to Rosemary. "I think we need to do something about it. I mean it's not right that he would be doing such a thing!"
Rosemary put a finger to her lips quickly. "And that's why I think our country's economy is improving so quickly. What do you think?" She said and winked at me.
"Oh yes! I completely agree with you."
I played along as Rosa walked back in with a silver tea tray. She handed us a cup of tea in a fancy blue china tea cup and a scone."Thank you very much ma'am." I said and gratefully are the scone.
"Do you like those?" Asked Rosemary after Rosa had left.
I nodded.
"Here, have mine. I don't care for them but I take them to be polite." She said handing me her untouched scone.
"How can you not like scones? They are so tasty!" I replied laughing.
"But back to planning, what should we do? We can't just sit here while innocent people are getting killed." I ventured."What nights are you available?" Annalise asked after a long silence.
"Any night," I replied.
