~Jack POV~

Everyone is born with a twin here, it's just how it is. I'm a bit of an oddity in that respect. I was born with a twin, but he died at birth, leaving just me. That freaked the Government out, they didn't know where to put me.

See, there's three territories, the Younglings, the Goods, and the Bads. Everyone starts out in the Younglings territory, if it wasn't obvious by the name. After birth, the Government watches us until we're sixteen. By then, they have a pretty good idea on our behaviors and stuff like that. That's when they separate us. If you're a good kid, and you're an absolute angel, they send you to the Goods. But if you're a troublemaker, then you're sent to the Bads, "the nesting ground of sin itself" as the older folks say.

Since my twin died, the Government couldn't compare us to see which one was better. The day I was supposed to be separated, I was held back. I acted like all the good kids, getting into the occasional pickle now and then. But that's what everyone did, it wasn't abnormal. The only thing that seemed off about me is how antisocial I was, or am. I actually wasn't placed in a territory until I was seventeen. By then the Government had basically given up and just made their best guess. I ended up being sent to the Good's territory. Ha! If only they knew how wrong they were.

I sat perched on a rock by a river, which was fairly shallow, the highest it ever got was about two feet, and that was only during the rainy season. Letting out a relaxed sigh, I trailed my fingers through the icy water, which caused goosebumps to form on my arms. Looking up, I could see the clear blue sky through the canopy of trees, my eye twitching as I continued to stare. I always came to this are of the forest, seeing as nobody else came this close to the edge, even though the wall was a good day's journey away from where I sat. Everyone was scared of the wall for some reason. Yes, the Bad's territory was in that direction, but the Government had given a good amount of space between the two walls. I chuckled, thinking of how fearful the Goods were of the Bads. If only they knew there was one living among them. Well, close to them. As I said earlier, I'm antisocial. "Three's a crowd?" Please, I can barely stand my own head sometimes.

Birds chirped around me, and I stared at the assortment of flowers bordering the river, the variety of shapes and colors astounding me. As I continued to marvel over the beauty of the flowers, I heard a snapping branch behind me. Without a moment's hesitation, I grabbed a rock and stood up, whipping around to see what was in the forest with me. What I saw surprised me. A man with red hair stared at me, his hands in the air and his eyes wide with fear. Fear of me. "What do you want?" I growled.

He stumbled over his words, shaking as he tried to form sentences. "Please. Don't hurt me. Just, put the rock down."

My arms stiffened and my nostrils flared. I was getting annoyed, and fast. "Stop talking to me like I'm a stupid dog and tell me why you're here!"

He jumped a little when I yelled. "I-I didn't know who you were, so I decided to follow you. Not a lot of people go into the woods, nonetheless get this close to the wall."

I scoffed as I dropped the rock, watching as it landed in the water with a sploosh. "I don't know why everyone's so scared of it. It's still a day's journey from here."

The man chuckled. "I think everyone prefers it be a year, or at least a month."

Rolling my eyes, I sat back down on the rock again. "Yeah well, you get what you get. But you people are gonna complain anyways."

The man chuckled. "I'm here aren't I? And I'm not complaining."

Glancing over my shoulder, I shot him a glare. "Why're you still here?" I snapped.

He shrugged, cautiously approaching the riverbank. "To make a new friend? I don't know."

"I don't do friends," I growled.

He chuckled, sitting a good three or four feet away from me before lifting up his hand for me to shake. "I'm Mark, you?"

Rolling my eyes, I answered glumly. "Jack." I then redirected my attention to the flowers, completely ignoring Mark's hand.

He awkwardly lowered his hand back to his side, looking at who knows what. After several minutes of silence, Mark stood up. "Well, I should get going. It was nice to talk to you Jack."

I simply grunted, sending a slap towards him when he patted me on the back. He merely chuckled, continued to stroll away from me and towards the edge of the forest. Growling, I picked up a rock, standing up as well. With a rage filled yell, I hurled the rock into the water, stumbling away from the river when water hit my face. I kicked and stomped on the ground for a few more minutes before sitting back down. I trailed my fingers through the chilly water, trying to distract myself from the thought of Mark. But I couldn't get him out of my head.
