Long ago, two races ruled over Earth: HUMANS and MONSTERS.

One day, war broke out between the two races.

Some say that the humans were jealous that the monsters had magic. Others claim that the monsters were the jealous ones, since humans had such strong souls. No one really knows why the fighting started. It could've even just been that there had been a little too much to drink, a little too late at night, and a fight had gotten a little too long, a little too aggressive, and a little too big. Who knows?

After a long battle, the humans were victorious.

They sealed the monsters underground with a magic spell.

That part of the story never seems to make sense. If only the monsters had magic, then how did the humans manage to get their hands on a spell? The only logical answer is that there was a monster helping them.

Well, if there was a monster helper, he's long dead now. That's for sure.

Many years later...

Mt. Ebott; 201X

Legends say that those who climb the mountain...

Like me.

Never return.

Like me.

I don't really know what was going through my head at the time. All I knew was that I had to get away from those people who I called my parents. But does a real parent force their child to the ground? Does a real parent whip their child with relish? Does a real parent enjoy  making their child bleed within an inch of their life?

I still remember the pure fear that would eat me up from the inside, back when I was on the surface. I still remember the whistling of the whip as it came down on me, digging into my back again and again. I know that I begged, cried even, for my parents to stop.

But they never did.

If I'd stayed any longer, I would definitely have died. So one night, when the whipping had went on for a long time even by my parents' standards, I just... left.

My back screamed with pain with every step, but I didn't stop. I couldn't stop. I knew that if I even paused for a moment to catch my breath, I would never be able to force myself to move forwards again.

I wasn't sure where I was going at first, but soon, my feet made their own choice. They steered me through the treacherous forest without a hitch and up the mountain, where I'd be able to get a better view of the world to help me decide where to escape to.

My head was pounding, my breath ragged and short. As I reached the top, I coughed once and all of a sudden, I couldn't see anything. Black spots bore into my eyes and obscured my sight. I stumbled forward and my foot snagged on something. A root, I think.

And then I fell.

Lying there in the flowers, I struggled to remember who I was, what I was doing. But I was so scared, so completely scared, I was only able to form one clear thought.

My name is Chara, I thought, and I'm determined to survive.
