"Niyah. Niyah. Lil sis wake up" I heard the sound of my brothers voice.

"Amir? Carter? Let me sleep a little more." I told him rolling back over.

"Sorry not sorry but you have school. First day of senior year. We better get there early or your gonna hear it from momma." That's when I opened my eyes to see my dad at the side of my bed.

"Wake up mommas. First day of senior year." he smiled weakly.

"I did it again huh?" I said as the tears came down from my cheeks. He embraced me in a hug.

"Its okay Niyah it's how you cope. Get yourself ready for school and I'll have breakfast downstairs waiting for you"

"Okay dad" I said wiping my face.

Its been only two months since my brother Carter got killed. Every since I've been having dreams with him in it almost every week. He was my bestfriend like it was always Carter and Niyah. Nobody could just say one of our names because we were always together. Even though he was 3 when I was born it always felt like we were the same age. Like twins.

Carter was way much taller than me of course. He had deep waves, straight white teeth, and he never needed braces which I was always jealous about. He was built like a football player and tall like a basketball player. Carter was always fit in highschool seeing as he did both sports.

Carter and I have the same chocolate complexion as our dad but the same features as our mom. Moms died when I was just 12. We were like the 3 musketeers always into somethin. Carter helped me out tremendously during that year and I almost flunked a grade. But not both of them gone and its just me and my dad.

I got outta bed to do my hygiene and pick clothes out. I wasn't up for trying to impress anybody on the first day back, so I decided to wear some of Carter's things.

I walked down to Carter's room and grabbed one of his shirts that says "GANGSTA" and wore one of his watches. I threw on some puma sweats, my allstars, and took my scarf off letting my braids breathe. Then I walked done to eat the breakfast my dad cooked.

"Do you want me to take you to school?" my dad asked. "No it's okay I'll walk or ask Jas to pick me up" I responded not looking his way. Carter is the one that always takes me to school, so there was an awkward silence.

"Call Jasmyn. I don't want you walking by yourself" he said coming around the island to kiss my forehead. "Have a good day mommas" he said and we did our 'father-daughter' handshake. "You too dad" I said.

I waited til he left and decided that I wasn't going to school today. I went back upstairs to my room, stripped right back in my pj's, and went to sleep. Sleeping is much more important.

~Hour later~

My phone rang signaling that Jas was calling. "Yes?" I answered half sleep.

"I'm on my way to get you" she told me.

"No Jas it's okay I'm not going today. You don't have to come get me" I groaned. "It wasn't a question Niyah. Now open the front door" she hung up the phone.

I fell on my side deciding on whether I should let her stay out the house or let her find the key in her big ole purse. I groaned and went back to sleep. What felt like one minute later she was right in front of my bed. I knew she would find the key.

"Boo you have to get out the house. I hate seeing you like this. Look how about this we go to school for a couple of hours then leave at lunch. Then you can do or go where ever you want. My place and see a movie or come here and chill. Sound good?" she said.

"Mhmm" I groaned. Jas left so that I could get ready. I took a shower with Jhene Aiko's voice playing in the background. I just put the same clothes on my dad saw me in no need to change.  I texted Jas that I was ready before I headed to her Bentley and we drove in silence.

We went to the principle's office to get our schedule. The principal Ms. Jenesequa is a family friend so we always go to her instead of the office.

"Hey babies" she smiled at us when we enter.

"Hey" I said standing by the door.

"Hey Mama Jen we came to get our schedules" Jas told her.

"Niy I scheduled a few of your classes to the afternoon. Jas I think yours is the same as well if not I'll fix it for you. They're printing out now" she told us. "Thanks" we said and left.

Jas walked me to class and we went on with our days. I remember my first day of highschool like it was yesterday...when Carter was here.
