I woke up with a throbbing pain in the back of my head. I felt cotton sheets under my hands and realized I was on a bed. I sat up, letting my eyes adjust to the darkness, and walked around. I found the light switch and turned on the lights. No one was there, but when I tried to open the door it was locked. I turned around and scanned the room for any thing to help me. It was a regular room with a bed, and desk with a lantern on it. No pictures, no decorations, nothing.I looked at the lock and sighed. It seemed easy enough, I thought. I pulled a few bobby pin out of my hair and crouched down so I was eye level with the lock. I've locked myself out of my room more times than I would like to admit so I took up on learning how to pick a few locks. It took longer than it should have, but I finally heard the click and the door swung open. I walked out and met a pair of dark brown eyes staring at me.
Before I could scream a voice said, "Hello there sunshine". Not even bothering to get a good look at him, I ran. I didn't know where I was going, but I ran only to almost colide with a stairway leading up. I regained my balance and ran up the stairs. Once I got to the top I relized something, a boat. I was on a boat. A very big boat at that.
I looked around and there, by the edge of the boat was Dennis. Dennis looking out over the side as if in thought not noticing me. I quickly ran over to him, but before I could reach half way to him I heard the same voice from the hallway.
"Wait! I just wanna talk!" Dennis turned around just as I reached him.
"Kate wha-"
"Where are we?" I said just as I felt whoever was chasing me tap my shoulder. Out of natural reflex I grabbed the hand and shifted the weight of the person so that they flipped over me on their back.
"Ow!" he said. I silently thanked my mom for making me take karate lessons a few years ago and faced Dennis.
Dennis brown eyes were wider than normal and before I could ask he said, "Woah, Kate. Just hold on and take a breather. It's not the end of the world yet."
"No, but it's pretty close," said the boy on the deck floor. He slowly got up as I turned my head. He was a few inches taller than me, and he had curly brown hair. He's skin was a nice tan color and around his waist he was wearing some sort of tool belt.
Before I knew it the words had already escaped my mouth "Leo Valdez?...," I felt my eyes get bigger and then Dennis's hand gripped my shoulder to stop me from falling.
"Yep, that's me. Though I don't remember introducing myself." He adjusted his belt before lookingat us.
I shook my head, and faced Dennis. "This is a joke right? You and your mom are just trying to prank me,...right?"
"Kate, if this is a joke then it's wasn't panned by me. And you know my mom isn't the joking type," I looked him dead in the eyes then back at Leo, who was studying us carefully.
"But he can't be real!" I whispered loudly.
"Hey, I'm right here. And I'm pretty sure I'm real," He made an act of pinching his arm. "Yep, I'm real," he said.
I rolled my eyes but before I could say anything I heard footsteps.
Six people ran up the stairs with weapons in their hands.
"Is everything okay?" said a blonde hair boy. If this was really the Mark of Athena then this is probably Jason.
"It's cool dude, but I'm touched you came all the way up to check on me," Leo said as he wiped a fake tear away. They rolled their eyes, and then faced me.
"Well, looks like someone's awake," said a boy that had to be non other then Percy Jackson.
"Yeah and I'd like to know what going on," I said.
"Wouldn't we all," Percy replied.
Then I remembered what Mrs. Jones said. Travelers. It had to be true or I was going crazy. I don't think I was though. Not yet at least.
I looked at all the others. There was Annabeth, dagger in hand, her blonde hair up in a pony tail, with worn shorts and a Camp Half-Blood t-shirt on. Frank, bow and arrow at the ready, dressed in a sweat suit. Hazel, with her shining Calvary sword. Her brown, curly hair falling into her eyes. Piper was next to Hazel with her own dagger in hand. I studied each of them carefully and looked back to Dennis. We couldn't tell them they were book characters. That would be breaking a rule. I've only been in a book once and I almost already broke one.
I reached my hand up and felt the necklace around my neck. Still there.
"When did you get here?" I asked Dennis.
"A few minutes after you did," Leo answered.
"Hmmm, okay. And how long have I been asleep?"
"About a day. You hit your head pretty hard when you fell from...um...Where exactly did you fall from? Because we kinda found you passed out on the table," said Percy."The ceiling," I said, as if it was obvious. I looked around and realized we were flying. I'm glad heights didn't affect me like it did my mom. The ship looked just like I imagined it. It even had Festus at the head of the ship.
I know I probably sound mad. Like, 'I don't like this, it isn't real, get me out of here!' but, to be honest, I'm shocked and I have no idea what to do.
I looked at Dennis. He shrugged and faced the demigods. He opened his mouth but before he could say anything, something hit the boat and I fell.
I got back up and grabbed the side of the boat to steady myself, and right there, about 18 inches in front of me was the head of an eagle, a very big, hungry looking eagle. I jumped back just as it snapped its beak. Then it flew higher and I got a good look at the beast. It had the head of an eagle alright but it wasn't an eagle. The body was that of a loin and from its back laid two wings. Someone cursed and that was all I need to answer my silent question. It was a griffin.
