01. | A CALL FROM UNCLE BOBBY.
ON A NIGHT NOT UNLIKE THIS ONE, MYA TURNER WOULDN'T HAVE DREAMED OF SITTING IN HER APARTMENT ALONE WITH THE WINDOWS OPEN WITHOUT A CARE IN THE WORLD. But there she was, music playing low from the stereo and her attention completely glued to her laptop as she overlooked the almost three-hundred-page document carefully, just as she had been for the past two months. Tomorrow, however, was the most important day of her career and she couldn't afford to screw it up: tomorrow determined whether or not she got to put 'Doctor' in front of her name or if she had to go back to the drawing board. The latter wasn't exactly an option, though, as much as it was the worst possible scenario.
She'd been working her ass off for the past seven years of her life to get to where she was now and she was not going to take 'try again later' as an answer. She was getting this final diploma and title if it killed her. No one could say Mya Turner wasn't dedicated to her craft.
As she finally moved onto her final page of writing to overlook, the Blackberry on the opposite end of her desk began to ring. She stretched over to reach it, nearly knocking her water bottle over in the process, and somewhat struggled to read the small screen after staring at the bulky one of her laptop for so long. She managed to make out the letters spelling out 'UNCLE BOBBY' and hurried to answer before the phone sent him to voicemail, "Yes, Uncle Bobby?"
Bobby Singer wasn't her uncle by blood, obviously, but he'd been around her so long and so often that it'd be silly not to consider him as such. She had uncles and aunts by blood, of course, but she wasn't particularly close with either side of her family. Her dad came from a family that wasn't really close to begin with aside from all sharing the same country background; his move to Vermont just kind of cut that off at the root. As far as her mom's side, she had a few aunts and uncles that she had sporadic contact with, but she never got invitations to family events or anything more noteworthy than the occasional poke on Facebook or a MySpace request from some cousin she didn't know that well.
So, Bobby was really the only person she truly considered family beside her dad. That was alive, anyway.
"You busy My?" she tried her best to ignore the crackling coming from his end of the phone. She'd told him countless times that it was time for him to replace his phone - especially after the wraith that basically broke it when it attacked him - and yet he had yet to do it. Despite their rocky relationship, Mya could tell just why Bobby and her dad were best friends once upon a time.
The woman crossed her legs over one another as she leaned back in her chair, "Just finishing up my doctoral dissertation – no biggie. What's up?"
"I need your fancy little brain and don't tell your dad about this," despite being comfortable, Mya's body immediately sat up straight and her attention converted completely to her uncle's voice. "Need you to find something about breaking a demon contract – if it's possible or not. I got Rufus looking into something else for me, but I need you to look into this with some discretion. He bitches like Hell when it comes to demons, but he's got all the good books at his place."
She frowned, "It's almost like they're evil or something. Did you make a deal with a demon?"
"'Course not, I'm not an Idjit, My. Just look into it as much as you can for me."
Whoever this was really for, he was genuinely concerned - she could hear that much in his voice. He was desperate too, 'cause in all her years of life and hearing about hunters and the lore, there was no possible way to break a deal with the Devil; well, metaphorically speaking.
"How long do I have to look?" she wasn't entirely convinced that it was possible, but there was no use in arguing that until she knew for certain. He did know a lot more after all.
"About 10 months, so get your college education done first."
Telling her that was like telling a fish to swim. She didn't feel like being sarcastic, however, as she knew that this was really serious if he was asking her of all people to help him. Bobby and Rufus were often at each other's throats and too hard-headed to listen to what the other was saying most times, but the one thing that her uncle always listened to was Rufus telling him not to get his daughter involved with anything supernatural.
Mya understood her dad's caution, honestly, but she liked to help out. Research was her favorite thing in the world - one of the reasons she took on a PhD program - and monsters were no different. She'd never tell her dad, but she helped her uncle out on more than one occasion. Sure, monsters and the like were things to be afraid of, but if she was going to help people it might as well have been in the easiest way possible for her.
She adjusted in her chair again as she looked out of her window, overlooking the city, "Who's this for really, Unc?"
"The boys were being their stupid selves again, that's all."
Of course - the Winchester boys. She'd only interacted with them once and as grateful as she was for the encounter, that didn't stop her uncle and dad from going off on tangents about what shitstorms they got themselves into. She'd heard that their dad passed away recently, but apparently death couldn't even stop them.
"Well, they saved my ass once so I guess I owe them, huh?" her uncle stayed quiet on the other end and Mya took that as her cue to wrap up the conversation, "I'll keep you updated with what I find."
"Thank you, Mya."
She just hoped all this trouble was worth it.
