"KRISTEN IF YOU DON'T WAKE UP AT THIS MOMENT NOT ONLY WILL I GROUND YOU FROM HANGING OUT WITH YOUR FRIENDS FOR A WEEK BUT ALL OF YOUR ELECTRONICS WILL BE CONFISCATED!!!" roared Kristen's father as he saw his only daughter completely asleep on her bed, with her headphones in. Smiling with satisfaction he watched as she jolted awake. Swearing, she glanced at the clock. 6:05... whoops, she did one of the things that her father asked her not to do. "So, which corporate mongrel is here tonight Daddy?"

A small smile tugged at the corner's of his lips. "The mongrels happen to be a family where their kid goes to you and your sisters school."

"Step-sisters," interjected Kristen. "Just because you married that woman and those two things, happened to come along with her doesn't mean that I'm related to them." Sighing, Mr. Cork walked over to Kristen and sat down on her bed. "Sweetie, I know that you're still coming to terms with your mother's death and the marriage , and Serenity and the girl's moving in. But please, just try to be a little civil tonight. The Moore's are actually a really nice family."

"Wait, did you just say the Moore's? As in Jake Moore and his parents?" A gleam lit up Kristen's eye. This evening just might not be too bad. Will Mann's best friend, who happens to be the second hottest guy in the school dining at my place. Definitely. Not. Bad. "They're already downstairs waiting for me, right." An awkward silence fills the room, as Mr. Cork shifted from foot to foot. Not meeting Kristen's gaze, he muttered, "Well.... seeing as you always are late for dinner, Serenity got tired of waiting and has already gotten them seated, and I believe that they are already tucking into the main course." Kristen's eyes widened, "but it's only 6:05! It's only 5 minutes of being late! I can't believe that you allowed her to do this! See, she already has you wrapped around her little finger!" Mr. Cork opened his mouth to say something but before he could, Kristen continued on, her temper in full swing now. "Don't you even dare to interrupt me father! Not now! She should have at least waited for you to bring me down! It's preposterous! Tell that bag that I'll be down when dessert is going to be served!" With that Kristen strode into her adjoining bathroom, slamming the door shut. Sighing, Mr. Cork lifted himself from his sitting position and walked towards the door to the main hallway. Pausing he glanced back into Kristen's room and spotted the photo of a family of three all smiling and laughing as the wind whipped off the mother's sun hat. Feeling a tightening in his chest, Mr. Cork quietly closed the door. Sometimes, I wonder if the marriage to Serenity was a good idea.

 -----------------

True to her promise, as soon as dessert was rolled out, Kristen entered the dining room. But instead of being dressed in an old t-shirt and sweats with her hair up in a sloppy bun from earlier before, she was wearing a pair of skinny jeans, a cleverly fitted sweater that enhanced her curves in all the right ways, and her brunette hair with highlights of dirty blond was straightened perfectly. Serenity looked up at Kristen, a fake smile pasted on her face. "Well... how nice of you to join us for dessert, Kristen." There was a hint of disapproval in her voice as she said 'Kristen'. Smiling sweetly Kristen retaliated with honeyed words that made her father wince slightly, "Well, how nice it was for you to tell me that our guests arrived, Step-mother." An uncomfortable silence filled the dining room. Mr. Cork cleared his throat, "How about we try some of the delicious souffle, that you ordered Hon? It sure looked amazing when the caterers dropped it off." Serenity sent a quick, tense smile towards her husband and walked into the kitchen. Sauntering over to her setting at the table, Kristen sent a cheeky smile towards Jake as she sat across from him. "So, Jake how are the soccer practices going?"

Jake shrugged, "They aren't too bad right now, but once when play-offs happen the coach will be drilling us with our game plays. We want to come home with the trophy this year." Just then Serenity entered the dining room again. "You play soccer Jake? Well my girls, Hailey and Tanya have a keen interest in trying out for the girls team this year."

"Jake you could help them with their passes and dribbling. It will make you improve even more. Then you won't be the runner up for MVP this year," said Mrs. Moore.

Mr. Cork cleared his throat, "Kristen plays soccer as well. She's the striker on her team. Last year she was actually awarded MVP."

"I didn't realize that you actually noticed that Dad. I thought you were too busy working," muttered Kristen.

"Manners Kristen. We have guests, remember?" instructed Serenity. An uncomfortable silence filled the table.

"I would love to learn how to play soccer ball," gushed Hailey. "I don't want to get covered in mud. That would be soooo gross!" added Tanya. Hailey kicked her under the table. "But Tanya if we don't get muddy we won't learn how to play from Jake." Just then realization dawned on Tanya's face. "Ohhh. I get it." Kristen snorted, "Since when did you two care about sports?"

"We always have," immmdiately responded Hailey. Tanya gave Kristen a look intedned for three year olds. "Duh, shopping is a sport Kristen."

Jake and Kristen looked at each other, "So, Jake want to go outside and kick a ball around."

"Yeah, sure. The souffle was delicious Mrs. Cork." With that Jake stood up from the table.

"Nice meeting you Mr and Mrs Moore." Kristen then followed Jake out of the dining room.
