You had returned to your flat late at night. More late than usual. You were exhausted from the long day at work you had. Answering phone calls, talking to clients, talking to stupid clients, talking to needy clients, everything was all over the place.
Being a lawyer wasn't an easy job to say the least, but it was a job you loved. Sometimes it was questionable if you really should be doing what you were doing or not. You thought of all the drop-outs from your class and thought that you could do something they couldn't and how that made you better than them.
After doing all that thinking, your brain latched onto someone specific. There was one person in your class that you hadn't thought about in a while. His name was Dan.
Dan was your only friend when you two were in law school together. He introduced himself to you on the first day when everyone else excluded you. He became your best and only friend.
Around his third year, he started to get super stressed with all the work. Dan uploaded videos regularly to YouTube. The work from uni and posting videos was too much for him to handle, so he dropped out. You were devastated to find out that your only friend was leaving. Before he left however, he gave you his number.
"If you ever need me," he said handing you a napkin with his number on it. You took the piece of paper in your hand and gave him a hug before he got in a taxi and went away.
You hadn't seen him for almost six years. You hadn't even thought about him in six years. He was posting YouTube videos and you watched a couple of them from time to time but you hadn't talked one-on-one since the last day you saw him and he gave you his phone number.
You pondered for a while on whether or not you should actually call Dan. You opened up his contact info on your phone and turned your phone off while it was on his page. It was a way of signifying that Dan was always there if you needed him.
You got ready for bed, but you couldn't sleep. You reached for your phone and unlocked it. You almost forgot that Dan's info was there. You don't know how or why but you suddenly found yourself putting your phone to your ear as you listened to the rings.
"Hello?" you heard a very posh voice on the other end.
"Is this Dan Howell?" you asked.
"Yes, who's this?" he answered.
"Dan, it's me. (y/n) (y/l/n). We went to law school together," you explained.
"Oh wow (y/n). It's been a while. How are you?" Dan asked.
"Well being a lawyer isn't exactly all that it's cut out to be," you sighed.
"Oh, really? How so?" he inquired.
"Well for one thing, everyone sucks," you started.
"Yeah that's always a huge problem," Dan agreed.
"And there's a shit-ton of paperwork to do. Every fucking day," you dragged on.
"Sounds painful," Dan commented.
"It is. But don't even get me started on the crap coffee in the office. How the hell am I supposed to power through eight hours a day when I can't even get a decent cup of coffee?" you continued with your rant.
"That's impossible," Dan gasped.
"And why am I expected to get through this day with an excellent performance when my boss is the most demanding person I've ever met and my co-workers are the laziest people I've ever met. Even lazier than you Dan," you said.
