It was Sunday night and it had been a full 24 hours since I learned that I would have to stop social media if I wanted to go to Hollins. I had no sleep the night before, pondering about what life would be like social media free. I also thought constantly about the hate I would get for quitting. But I also thought about the hate that I got already. I was completely stuck.
I was looking at my math homework, but completely distracted, when my phone rang. I slowly turned to look at it, not wanting to talk to anyone. Then I saw Britt's user identity and my eyes widened.
I sprang on top of my phone, quickly pressing the answer button. "Hello?"
"Hey, Jacob!" Britt said brightly. I smiled, the sound of her voice temporarily relaxing me.
"You don't know how amazing it is to hear your voice right now." I said as I shuffled away from my math homework on the kitchen table and went into my living room. I plopped down tiredly onto the couch as I listened to Britt.
"Jacob," Britt said, giggling. I could just imagine her rolling her eyes at me. I smirked. "Anyways, I called to ask you how did your meeting go at that college?"
The smile quickly faded off my face. I sighed.
"It went...just..."
I stopped, sadness filling my chest. The meeting was not what I was hoping for at all. I was told that there is a chance I might not be accepted because my grades were horrible, and that even if I was accepted, I would have to quit social media, my entire world.
I was thinking over the meeting as Britt said, "Well? Don't leave me hanging!"
I bit my lip. Britt's voice sounded so happy and excited. If I told her that my future wasn't looking so bright, she would be defeated.
I took a breath as I said, "It was just amazing. Absolutely perfect."
Britt squealed from the other end of the line. Dread filled me as she said, "I'm so proud of you, Sagittarius!"
I groaned. "Again with the name calling?" I said chuckling.
Britt laughed. "Sorry, not sorry. I could call you worse."
I frowned. "Like what?"
Britt paused. "Hmmm...Well I could call you Saggytitties. Or Rolf. Or Rolf Saggytitties. Or you dumb mother-"
"I get it!" I said quickly, blood rapidly pumping through my veins. She began to laugh on the other end of the line. Her laugh was so contagious and I couldn't help but laugh along, even though she was just making fun of me.
Once we had stopped laughing, Britt calmed down. "But seriously, Jacob, I am so proud of you."
My smiled faded away, and I nodded my head. Guilt sunk through my body. I couldn't handle the silence, so I said, "Enough about me. What about you?"
Britt sighed dreamily. "Well, today I got a letter from a college that is in Pennsylvania. And a few days ago I got one from a North Carolina college. They both have accepted me!"
My stomach dropped. "Did you say Pennsylvania?" I asked nervously.
"And North Carolina." Britt said proudly.
Britt was moving away for college? I knew that when people moved away for college, they usually start new lives there and never come back to where they came from. If Britt started a new life somewhere else, she might stay there. It may have been selfish of me, but I did not want her moving away from college, because then she'd be moving away from me. I had another problem on my hands.
"Oh, well, that's great." I said flatly. Britt didn't seem to hear the sadness in my voice.
"Thanks!" Britt said happily. I cleared my throat.
"Umm, did you apply to any colleges in Virginia by chance?" I asked nervously. Britt sighed.
"Yeah, but they haven't gotten back to me. It's been almost a year since I applied, too. I don't think I got into that one." Britt said glumly.
"But if you did get in, would you go to that one?" I asked, urgency in my voice.
Britt thought about it for a while before saying, "Yeah, I guess so."
Hope filled up inside of me as I smiled. "I think you should go to that one! Sounds really great! Heard lots of great stories!"
Britt laughed. "Jacob, I haven't even told you what college it is yet."
"It has to be great!" I said, jumping into a sitting position, the couch squeaking under my weight. "They'll pick you, I know it. Remember, best for last! You're probably the very last one they're picking because you're the best!"
Britt giggled, her voice echoing through my ears. "Thanks," she said lightly. "I have to go now, but I'll see you tomorrow at school, okay?"
I sighed, nodding my head. "Yeah," I said, pressing the phone closer to my ear.
"Bye, Jacob." Britt said in a small voice.
"Bye." I said. I quickly pulled the phone away form my ear and looked down at the end button. I slowly pressed it, the phone call disappearing. I sighed, dropping the phone into my lap. I groaned, looking up at the ceiling. My life had just gotten a whole lot more complicated.
