It was a Sunday afternoon when Abigail awoke from her third nightmare that week. Another sleepless night, sweating through the midst of some dark evil force, trying to creep into the stems of her brain. In the shadows of her mind, she could see the evil lurking like no other. Except, this was no ordinary nightmare; this one seemed real. Like someone had glued a piece of memory to the back of her mind and she had suddenly came across the sticky substance. It was like walking on a piece of gum in a dark alleyway.
It wasn't the first time she had night terrors about some two headed creature attacking her while she tried to run away from death. She knew it wasn't the first time she had leaped from her crinkled pillow where she had held it so tight, that it seemed to have shrunk beneath her head.
Yikes.
It seemed smaller.
However, it seemed to be the first time she had possibly forgotten what the nightmares were even about. Every other time, she would remember every single detail. Now, it was just another morning, waking up to the smell of newborn coffee grains and a knock on her bedroom door.
Every night seemed to be another night of red veined eyes surrounded by claws wrapping around her neck, while it sucked the life from her. Another figure seemed to pop into her mind too, amongst the others. A tall figure stood in front, dressed in a black coat and a fitted hat, but it was just a shadow. Behind that shadow, a small one dressed in a fitted dress with long hair. Her parents, she thought. Maybe the ones that gave her up a long time ago.
Where were they?
She didn't know who they were. Only that they gave her up when she was six years old to her new parents Alissa and Steven. They were her parents now and they weren't just faceless shadows like her real parents. In fact, they were there for her, unlike the real ones. They left and disappeared, not providing any information as to where they had gone. Just a blank memory now in the back of her brain.
She could remember voices, some type of flashing light. Although the dreams seemed real, they were impossible. How could she dream of such horror? A demon with two heads couldn't possibly exist?
"Abigail!" Alissa shouted, approaching her side with a washing basket placed in both hands. All the overflowed clothes spilled onto the bed as she shoved it aside and placed the back of her hand on Abigail's head.
"I'm fine" Moaned Abigail.
She patted Alissa's hand away and kicked away a stinky sock that lay stiff on her leg. Steven was nauseating she thought. Although they were her parents now, she couldn't figure out why she couldn't admit they were. She always seemed to call them by their actual names. What was the reason? Well, she had this weird fascination about her real parents coming back from the dead; she imagined the soft skin of their palms gracefully emerging from the darkness and grabbing her for comfort.
And this world.....
The world she imagined was magnificent. Bright colors, magical creatures breathing fire and people making magic. These dreams that popped into her head every night seemed real. Like it was a place she had visited before and all of a sudden forgot. Yet, places like this only existed in books and movies. There was no such thing as magic.
"Another nightmare?" Asked Alissa. She frowned, removing her hand and continuing to stuff the dirty clothes back into the basket, before stating, "You need to see someone about that. It isn't the first time you've woken up in a sweat, it could be something serious Abigail. How about I get you an appointment with my old therapist Dennis? He's ever so lovely!"
"I'm fine Alissa. Just too many horror films I guess?" said Abigail.
Which is true in a way. Too many horror films can mess with a person's mind, especially when they're all you watch? But Abigail knew it wasn't the horror films picking at the edge of her skull. Somewhere between light and darkness, something was drilling into her soul. Something so cruel and evil that no other could control.
