"God damnit, I thought I would have gotten at least a B this year."
"That's what happens when you doodle in class!"
A girl with a bright smile was walking next to her, this was her long time friend, Alyssa. As the two girls pushed their way threw the crowds of kids trying to leave the elementary school, Rummie stretched her arms.
"Well at least I don't have to deal with Ms. Quincy anymore." "Yeah her class sucked." Before the girls parted ways at the corner of a block, Alyssa grabbed Rummies sholder. "Hey.. You wanna go get something from the corner store down the block?" Rummie thought for a second and answered
"Sure." Rummie always half expected Alyssa to make last minute plans, she always had. Alyssa was the type of person who always had to go somewhere to feel good about herself, it was just her.
"So are you going to that Summer camp again?"
"Yep. This year there's some new person in charge. Apparently they've changed the entire place."
"Hmm. That sounds inresting, but isn't everyone there older than you?"
"Yeah, what about it?"
"Isn't it awkward at all. Being the shortest, wont they push you around or something?" Other kids ran past the two girls to the corner store pushing them a bit. The girls didn't do anything but glare at the rebellious kids.
"Nah, well.. They didn't push me around cause my mother works for the camp, I'm pretty sure I've told you this... But anyway, they would always ask me to sneak them some more of the dessert for the day, or get them out of trouble, things like that." "Really?, pfft!" Alyssa chuckled "Did you actually help them?" Rummie smirked "If I felt like it." they reached the corner store, and Rummie opened the door for Alyssa, like always. They walked into the store already knowing what to get, a bag of ships for Alyssa, and a bottle of iced tea for Rummie. Rummie payed the man at the counter and they walked out the store.
"Where to now?" Rummie asked.
"Do you have time to come to my house?"
"Sorry, I can't. I need to pack for camp, the buss comes to pick us up tomorrow."
"Oh." Alyssa cheery voice deflated.
"Can you walk me home at least?"
Rummie nodded and they began to walk in the direction of Alyssa's house. They were both silent for the entire walk. They began to walk down the block that Alyssa's house was on when Alyssa suddenly stopped.
"Do you have to go?" Alyssa said in a whisper that Rummie could barley hear.
"Well.. Yeah, everything's been set up already, and I don't really have a choice to begin with. You know my parents are both busy."
Alyssa looked at Rummie.
"It's so lonley here without you. And you know that nobody else in that school bothers to talk to me. And Shannon never bothers to answer my texts anymore." Rummie was lost for words at the sudden realization that Alyssa was tearing up.
"Alyssa, I'm sorry. I-"
"No no, Don't be." Alyssa sniffed between words. "Sorry... Didn't mean to get all weird."
"It's ok." Rummie stepped forward to hug Alyssa.
"Just.. bring your phone.. try to text me... Ok?"
"I'm not sure if they have signal towers there-"
Rummie was cut off by Alyssa's desperate and still shaky voice. Alyssa tightened the hug.
"JUST... In case." Rummie looked awkwardly at the ground for a second. She nodded.
"Thank you." Alyssa said and calmed down again. Rummie released the hug. And they began walking down the sidewalk again. After a few steps Alyssa fell down, obviously on purpose.
"OHH no!" Alyssa said over dramatically. Rummie realized the question that was about to be asked. "Can you carrrryyy me?~" Alyssa sang. Rummie rolled her eyes playfully "Fine." Alyssa climbed on to Rummies back and smiled brightly. "NOW CARRY ME PEASANT!" she said in a 'royalty voice'. Rummie half- ran down the pavement, to the 'queens castle'. Cause that's how it was. That's how it always was. Memories filled Rummies mind. Memories and moments that they've had in this one spot over the years. Alyssa was a character. She was Powerful, and always got what she wanted. It's easy to read her expressions if you know her. She likes chocolate ice cream. And would take on any challange. She was outgoing. But like anyone, she had flaws, and her cracks. She got nervous easily. You could call it anxiety. But Rummie remembered, she was in the waiting room of hospitals waiting for her. Because what was Rummie without Alyssa? She was just Rummie. The Rummie who never gets out of the house. She never liked ice cream. She was always fascinated by bugs. But what else? "HEY SLOW DOWN!" Alyssa yelled, hitting the top of Rummies head. They were on front of Alyssa's house. Rummie put Alyssa down gently. Before Alyssa went into her house, she hugged Rummie tightly, and whispered "Call me? Ok?" Rummie knew that the thought of calling Alyssa was low, due to there being no service in the middle of the woods. But she nodded anyway. As soon as Rummie nodded, Alyssa let go and began running towards the front door of her house. "K, byee!" She waved. As Alyssa walked into her house, Rummie smiled, and walked home silently.
