We were meant to be, but a twist of fate

Made it so you had to walk away

Reese frowned from his seat in the Roman's dining hall, the plate of food before him untouched and going cold. He slumped his head lazily against his hand, blue irises trained on a point in the distance that seemed to have snagged his attention. He'd been like this for the past five minutes, and it took every ounce of nerve within him to keep from storming off in a thought-induced stupor.

"Uh, Reese?" Tessa reached across the table to poke him with her fork. "You okay?'

Not at all, Reese wanted to say. But that would have been dramatic and frankly unfair to the daughter of Poseidon sitting across from him. Having just broken up with her boyfriend—Reese's best friend, Kaden Gray—Tessa was in a state of emotional flux. It was up to her friends to keep her distracted and busy, and right now, the mission was in Reese's hands.

Reese chewed on his bottom lip, averting his gaze from the blonde daughter of Cupid seated across the hall and to his friend. He feigned a smile. "I'm great."

Tessa made a face, the one that Reese recognized in an instant. It read 'nice try, bozo, but you're not a very good liar.' Reese sighed upon the sight of it, straightening his posture from the slump he'd settled into.

"Let's just say we're both experiencing emotional turmoil," He dragged his hair through his blond hair, huffing a sigh as he took a sip of his water. However, as soon as he finished, his eyes trained on the movement in the distance: Imogen was standing up, followed by a boy, and they were laughing and leaving the premises.

Reese's grip around his goblet tightened, and he set his jaw. This wasn't fair. Not at all.

He and the Roman girl had started a sort of...fling that Reese couldn't get enough of. However, to him, it was much more than that. The heated kisses and the whispers where no one would be able to hear them were one thing, but the passion that they seemed to radiate, the feeling of content that settled in Reese's heart whenever he saw her was another. The butterflies, the sweaty palms, he was falling hard.

But to her, it was just a game. Reese was just another pawn on the chessboard of life in Imogen's jade eyes, to be moved around and toyed with at her will.

Reese slammed his goblet down, so hard that the table shook. His fury was fueled by heartache, not anger. He wanted an explanation, he wanted a confession, but who was he to demand that out of someone he was falling in love with.

"Must be some turmoil," Tessa mumbled, stuffing a forkful of pasta into her mouth.

Reese sighed, watching as the last trace of Imogen's silky blonde hair disappeared from his sight. "You're telling me."

I don't care what people say when we're together

You know I wanna be the one who holds you when you sleep

I just want it to be you and I forever

Imogen tossed her head back, a ripple of laughter emanating from her glossy pink lips. Her green eyes sparkled in the sunlight, and when she met Reese's gaze, the son of Apollo felt his heart stop and sputter back into beat again.
