chapter two

Someone had bumped into me and I was a little thankful for that. The stranger steadied me before almost falling over himself. Bodies were touching one another - some voluntary, others not - and it wasn't my favorite part of the outdoor concerts.

The stranger had rich brown eyes and an intriguing complexion. I couldn't help but notice that he didn't appear to live around here. Maybe it was because of how pale he was compared to the people around him in their shorts and tanks with sun kissed tans and sea caressed hair.

"May I help you?" I yelled over the music so he could hear me.

"Yeah! Actually." He stood a little closer so we could hear each other betters

"All right, stranger, how can I help you?"

"See, my friends and I are having a little contest. It's who can get a girl's number first."

"So, where do I come in?" I joked, earning a little laugh.

"You wouldn't happen to know a girl who's got an active phone number, would ya?"

"I don't, but I could give you mine."

"Ahh, perfect." He grinned, pulling his phone out an began to tap away. I said my number to him casually, oddly finding the boy very reliable. He was mellow, and in the midst of the chaos, I liked that. "What's you name, love?" The last box on his phone he needed to fill in was the one where your name went.

"You can call me Izzy."

"I can delete it afterwards if you want. I can find you and you can watch me do it."

"How thoughtful," I laughed a little. "It's yours if you tell me your name."

He hesitated then said, "Zayn. Zayn Malik."

My eyes widened a little as the base dropped in the song that had been playing. The beat ran through my veins and I got the chills. Music was practically my life.

"You're in that boy band, aren't you?"

"I'm in the cool one."

"The Beatles?"

"Yes, I'm the reincarnation of Ringo."

I laughed. "You're not so bad. I want you to win this contest, so run along, Zayn."

He nodded and gave me a small smile. "Thanks again. Nice meeting you." He swayed to the beat as he found his way out of the crowd and turned to find his friends. Imagine Dragons' newest song was blasting and I danced to their heavy beats and rock ballads. My toes dug in the sand as I swayed my hips. I wished I asked that Zayn kid to stick around and dance with me. Where the heck was Josh?

"Hey, who was that?" I heard someone say from behind me.

Josh was holding my drink as another band began to set up on stage. There were dozens of artists who each played about three or four songs. It hit all genres of music and carried on all throughout the night. I loved it when the huge bonfires were lit as the sun went down and the acoustic guitars came out. It was the best way to end the night.

"Oh, it was no one. Don't worry about it," I smiled, taking my drink. "There's so many people here. It's insane."

Josh brought the drink to his lips and drank without hesitation. "Better than last year, huh?"

"Definitely." I smiled at strangers and waved if I saw anyone familiar. There was no sign of my brother, nor Kaylee. I guessed they were probably making out somewhere among the crowd.

"Izzy!"

I stand corrected.

"One Direction's playing up next and I totally saw you flirting with one of them!" She squealed, nudging me.

"Izzy? Flirting? Ha!" Josh cackled, making me roll my eyes as I took another sip of my drink.

"You should be thanking me, you know." Kaylee, in a word, was daring. I'm pretty sure she'd be in jail if I wasn't the more mature one in this friendship. She definitely made my life more interesting. Once, I thought she was ruling a drug cartel from her bedroom. She wouldn't let anyone inside there for months.

"Why should I be thanking you?" I said, giving her a funny look.

"It's your outfit, silly." She said, as if I was supposed to know that. "You stand out. In a good way."

"That Zayn kid just asked me for my number to help him win a bet. That's all."

"And you just gave it to him?" Joh asked, eyebrows raised.

I shrugged. "What's he going to do with it? Spam my voicemail?"

Josh grumbled, muttering words I didn't hear because the music from the One Direction guys had already started playing.

Maybe I was drunk, but I remember dancing and singing to every song they sang. Kaylee was dancing with me as if something had taken over her. Her boyfriend talking to Josh nearby as we dug out toes into the sand and put our hands in the air.

I also remembered how Zayn winked over at me in between their song, because how could you forget something like that?

As if the night couldn't get any weirder, after the show Zayn had called my phone, inviting me over by the bonfire at nine.

I suddenly regretted giving him my number.
