PREVIEW

Sun streamed through my curtains, telling me to wake up. I rolled out of bed and picked out my clothes for the day. A button-up jean shirt with some jeans and boots. Going downstairs, I heard my dad bickering on the phone with my biological mother. Summer was tomorrow and she wanted me there. My step mother wasn't horrible, but she didn't like me.

As for my step dad, he... I don't like him. We'll leave it at that for now. So as you could see, I wanted to stay here with my real dad, but when he hung up the phone he gave me an apologetic look. Before he could apologize, I silenced him by walking out.

I went to the creek bank and grabbed my guitar I kept by the tree. No one came around here, so it was safe. I strummed some cords and hummed. I wasn't that good at writing songs, unfortunately. But I had some.

"Don't wanna leave again," I sang. "Don't wanna see her. Or him. I try so hard to act like it's okay, but believe me when I say... It's a walking nightmare over there. Ooh. Mama just leaves, Bobby won't let me be, and I just wanna scream." I strummed a little more and went back to the song. "Mama never knows. But Bobby gets a little crazy when she goes. The moment that door closes... So does mine. It's a walking nightmare over there. Mama just leaves, Bobby won't let me be, and I just wanna... Scream from the rooftops, scream until my heart stops, scream for the love of God, someone could possibly hear me... I just wanna... Scream."

My bio dad didn't know about what went on at Mama's house, but he knew something happened. At the end of the summer I always came back battered, skinnier, and upset. Walking back home slowly, I thought of ways I could get out of going. But by the time I got there, Mama was in the driveway.

"Come on, Rachie," she smiled. "It's summer!"

"Summer starts tomorrow," I said.

"Yeah, but it's only the last day. You won't miss anything. Let's go," she insisted.

I went upstairs, grabbed my suitcase and guitar (I had two), and went to Mama's truck. I didn't wanna go.
