"I just don't get it."

Jake glanced at me. "Get what?"

"Bella," I said flatly. "She's... fine, I guess. But what's the deal? You talk about her like she walks on water."

He raised an eyebrow, clearly not expecting that. "You don't even know her."

"Exactly." I turned to face him. "Neither do you, really. You've known her for what, a few weeks? And suddenly, she's your whole world?"

Jake frowned. "That's not fair. And I've known her since we were kids. Her dad has always been friends with my dad.

"Yeah, but she moved away when she was like, what? Five? You only saw her for a couple of summers after."

He continued to frown.

"I'm just saying," I continued, trying to keep my voice even, "I've been your best friend since we were six, and I don't think you've ever talked about a girl the way you talk about her."

That landed harder than I intended, and he shifted uncomfortably in his seat.

"She's different," he said, quieter now. "Jake turned to look at me. "Why are you even bringing this up?"

"Because I'm tired of hearing about her like she's the greatest thing to exist. She's just a girl, Jake. An awkward, pale girl who moved to Forks."

"Shut up, Harper." His voice was suddenly sharp. "You don't know her. You don't know what she's going through."

I was surprised by the sudden change in his voice. Jake rarely got upset with me, so I wasn't sure what was happening with him. Lately, he had gone from the happy-go-lucky person he was to constantly getting irritated and mad over the smallest things.

I scoffed. "Jacob, she only reached out to you because her boyfriend dumped her. She doesn't even like you. She's just depressed and needs someone to take her mind off her ex."

His jaw clenched. "You're just jealous."

That hit me like a slap. "What?"

"You're mad because I finally care about someone who's not you."

I stood up, heart pounding in my ears. "Wow. So that's what you think?"

He didn't answer.

"I thought I was your best friend," I said, my voice shaking. "But go ahead, keep chasing after some girl who's only using you as a rebound." I stood up from where I sat on the edge of his bed. "How pathetic," I murmured.

"What did you say?"

I froze, instantly regretting my choice of words. I could either ignore him and continue to walk out the door or turn and say it to his face.

I turned around, making eye contact with him.

"I said," I paused, finding the courage to be mean to my best friend. "How pathetic."

He narrowed his eyes at me.

"Why are you being such a bitch?" He scowled.

My eyes widened, not expecting that from him. I don't think in all eleven years of our friendship had he called me a bitch. Embry and Quil? Sure, but not Jake.

I didn't bother to respond. Instead, I grabbed my jacket and stormed toward the door.

The screen door slammed behind me as I stepped out into the cold La Push air. Tears burned at the corners of my eyes, but I blinked them away before they could fall.

I'm not going to cry over Jacob Black.
