I rang the doorbell and patiently waited for my best friend Kate to open the door. Today we had to study for our chemistry test but in reality we were going to procrastinate until the absolute last minute.
The door swung open and I was greeted by her smiling face. "Hey Joey, come in!"
"Hey girl ! Ready to study ?"
She scoffed. "Fuck that. We need to get caught up on Supernatural !"
I laughed as she grabbed my hand and led me to the couch. As she flipped through the channels, I noticed her brother, Shane, coming down the stairs and walking into the kitchen parallel to the couch.
I was always drawn to him, in a weird way. Like if he asked me something simple like what I wanted to drink, I would freeze up until Kate decided for me.
She always made fun of me for liking him, even since we were little. He was a smart senior and usually hung out alone whenever I spotted him in the cafeteria. Reading an old book or listening to music.
There was just something about him I couldn't grasp.
"Joey, it's starting ! " Kate cried excitingly.
I settled down into the leather sofa and prepared for the season finale of my favorite show, my mind wandering off from Shane.
Two pulse-stopping hours later, Kate had finally gotten up and stretched. I yawned myself, feeling tired even though it was only 8.
She wandered into the kitchen and I heard her groan as she slammed a cupboard.
"There's no freaking food ! " She groaned.
"Shane ! Go buy food !"
"Fuck off !" He shouted back and I snickered from my little spot, enjoying the scene.
"Whatever Mr.I'm-an-only-child." Kate said, grabbing her keys.
"No...I'm not." I said, looking down.
Kate went silent in a sense of respect for my sister Nicole, who died last year.
"I love you Satsuki." She smiled sympathetically.
I gave a weak chuckle at my nickname and waved her off. After she closed the door I buried my face in my knees, trying to push all thoughts of Nicole away. But the more I tried, the greater the happy memories started to flood my mind.
I heard footsteps and a soft hand touched my back. I jumped and looked up at a worried looking Shane.
"Sorry man, you alright ?" He said backing up from me.
I felt myself becoming flustered. "Uh, yeah yea, I'm okay."
"You sure ? Cuz' I can just..." He jerked his thumb in a upward motion, telling me he could just leave.
"It's just that...I miss her. I don't have my blood best friend anymore. My number one suporter is just, gone ." I closed my eyes and rested my head against my knees. Why was I telling him this?
Seeing my emotional state, Shane awkwardly stroked my back.
"Hey...Joey, it'll get better. You have your friends, Kate, and uh, me." He mumbled.
I looked up at him and gave him a genuine smile.
"Thank you Shane."
He looked taken aback by my kindess, but never stopped stroking my back.
It was nice.
But Kate barged through the door and took in the scene.
She came over and smacked his hand away.
