The next morning I woke up and realized it was June 1st. I yanked the covers off and raced downstairs.
I ran into Dad in the kitchen on his way to work.
"Why the rush?" Dad asks as I search desperately for a muffin.
"I realized I only have a little over a month to plan this Fourth of July picnic. If I'm going to do this right, I've got to plan it down to the last detail. No mistakes."
"Just don't turn into a picnic planning psycho." Dad says as he picks up his brief case.
"Never." I say finally finding a muffin. I take a bite. Mhmm. Heaven.
"Bye sweetie love you." Dad says as he opens the door.
"Love you too. Have a good day at work." I say as he blows me a kiss and shuts the door behind him.
I go upstairs to get some paper and a pen. I label the first sheet 'Things to order'.
I pause and realize that the house is screaming. I panic and look around. Diane comes running in and looks at me with fear in her eyes.
"There was a spider." She's panting and has her hand over her heart.
I raise my eyebrows and have to stifle a laugh.
"Don't you dare laugh at me. You would be the same way if there was a snake."
I roll my eyes and go back to making my list. "Whatever." I say.
She notices my frantic scribbling and looks down at my paper. "Oh is this the list for the Fourth of July picnic?"
"Yes." I say not looking up from my scribbling.
"Are you sure this is a good idea sis?"
This question causes me to look up. "Yea. Why wouldn't it be?"
"Well, haven't you noticed that Dad seems a little hostile towards our neighbors? Especially the Evans's?"
"Well yea but that's all the more reason to have it so they can overcome their problems with each other. Don't you think? Don't you want to have friends in our neighborhood?"
"Yea I guess. I just, I don't know, I have a bad feeling about this Ali."
With that, she turns around and goes back up to her room to get ready for work.

Later that day, I feel the need to take a walk. What Diane said really made me think. I wasn't doubting my plans. I was just having some second thoughts.
As soon as I got back, I ordered the stuff I needed for the party. I am checking off the stuff I ordered when Diane walks into the room, but she doesn't just walk, she floats.
"Woah! What's up with you?" I say with a smile on my face.
"Nothing." She says as she gets an orange out of the fridge.
"Okay now that's obviously a lie. C'mon! Tell me!"
"I did not lie! There's nothing going on! I swear!" She avoids my eyes but I can still see that they are misty and with a far away look.
"I know! You met a guy!"
"What? No I didn't."
"Ohhh you sooo did! Look at you! You floated into the room and yours eyes are all lovey." I say.
She sighs. "Fine you got me I did." She rolls her eyes but the look from earlier is still there.
"Spill." I say as she sits down in the chair across from me.
"Well, I was at work and was on my break and I had a pretzel. Well I was walking and wasn't really looking where I was going because I was looking at a pair of jeans in a store window and all of a sudden, I'm on my butt with my pretzel broken on the dirty mall floor and I was about to say some nasty things to the person who made me loose my pretzel because you know how I am about my pretzels." She took a break from her story to point her finger at me.
I roll my eyes and wave my hand for her to continue.
"Anyway, I look up and this guy is standing there. And any words I had been about to say got stuck in my throat because he was literally the cutest guy I had ever seen in my life, Ali, really." She giggled.
I smirked but let her continue.
"And he began apologizing right away and helped me up and his hand ended up being on my waist. And I don't know, just this warm feeling spread through my whole body." She smiled a goofy smile.
"Awww." I sang. She smacked me, then continued.
"We looked into each other's eyes for a few seconds. And then he said, 'I am so sorry. I didn't see where I was going. I hope I didn't cause you any pain when you fell.' And Ali, I swear I melted into a puddle on the floor right then and there." She giggled.
"And I said, 'No no it was my fault. I was looking at a pair of jeans. I'm sorry.' And I pointed to the window. And, get this, he actually said this, 'Yea you would totally rock those jeans. Wow did I really just say that out loud? I'm a total weirdo.' And of course, I smiled and giggled like an idiot and said,'No you're not a weirdo. And thank you.' He said,'Yea no problem.' Then we looked into each other's eyes some more." She looked all dreamy and I couldn't help but feel so happy for her.
"He looked down and noticed my crumbled pretzel and he said that he would buy me another one. I tried to refuse but he insisted. We walked over to the pretzel bar and he asked what kind of pretzel I wanted and then we sat down and talked until it was time for me to go back to work."
She sighed and said,"Ali, he- he's so funny and so sweet and such a gentlemen."
I smiled. "It sounds like you really like this guy."
"Yea I do. I can't get him off my mind." She crossed her arms across the table and looked down at the floor.
"Awww. It's so cute! I think you've found your Prince Charming!" I tickled under her chin and she swatted my arm.
"What's his name?" I asked.
"His name is Alex." She gets that dreamy look again.
"Awwwww."
"Yea well I'm gonna go to bed now." She got up and started for the stairs.
"Okay. Well sleep well and have sweet dreams of your Prince Charming."
"Hey! I could say the same to you!" She turned and then continued back up the stairs.
I laughed.
