Curiosity Saved the Cat
I sit at on the plush cushion that is set into my bay window. The warm sun warms my skin as I stare at the freshly risen sun. It's only minutes past sunrise and I'm already missing the golden fog that was once scattered along my yard. I swing my legs over the side of my bay window and walk over to my neat desk. I lay my books into my bag carefully before slinging it onto my shoulders and stepping out of my room. I walk down the hall and into the room that belonged to my little sister, Jane. She is four years old. She has light brown, almost blonde hair and brown eyes. She's in that stage where she thinks boys are disgusting and is infatuated with the color pink. I think it's sweet where my parents think its odd. They just don't remember what it's like to raise a four year old girl. It's been thirteen years! I don't blame them, I just think they should lay off her a little. They always scold her for being rude when mother or father introduce her to a family with a son. She always scrunches up her nose and hides behind my mother. I don't mind how she acts.
"Wake up, Janey." I say while softly rubbing her back. She stirs lightly against my touch before rolling onto her back and blinking up at me.
"Is it morning?" She asks while rubbing her face.
"Yeah, go brush your teeth and head down for breakfast." I say while pushing her knotted hair out of her eyes. She sits up and hobbles out of the room. I walk out behind her and walk up the flight of stairs to the room belonging to my older brother, Ryan. He is eighteen. Ryan and me are very close. He has dark brown hair with blue eyes, just about the opposite of Jane. I look up into his room to find him on the phone. I walk over to his desk chair and sit down quietly. I hear him utter a few words before he hangs up the phone.
"Who was that?" I ask while cocking my head to the side.
"Angela Summers. She says that she needs me to stay after school for a seniors meeting." He says with a shake of his head. Ryan isn't big on commitments. It isn't that he won't show if he says he will. He just doesn't like doing it. So when someone tells him he has to go somewhere it kills his buzz.
"Don't worry. I'm sure it'll be quick and painless." I say with a positive smile.
"Yeah, yeah." He says while standing and slinging his bag over his shoulder. I hop up from my seat and walk down the stairs.
"You should really use both shoulders." I say to him. He just chuckles in response and follows me to the kitchen. My father sits at the table with the paper in hand and my mother in the kitchen with Jane. Father is older than my mother at fifty. His dark brown hair is balding and his blue eyes have lost the sparkle they once had. Mother on the other hand is forty six. She has blonde hair that is almost always in a bun and dark brow eyes. Neither of my parents look anything like me. And for the longest time Ryan would tell me I was adopted.
"Good morning everyone." I say while swiping an apple from the table.
"I'll be staying over a friends to night so don't wait up for me." I say while Ryan tugs me out of the house.
"And who might this friend be?" Ryan asks with a sly smirk. He knows exactly who it is. I shoot daggers at him and ignore the question. Her name is Marlene. She's really smart and funny but she can never come to my house because she's a greaser. She has short red hair and emerald green eyes. I climb into my brothers car and sit in silence. I guess I should tell you about myself now. I have long golden brown hair that and just above my waist and hazel eyes. I'm not tall at all but I'm really thin. My parents were worried that I had an eating disorder or something. I don't. I just have an unnaturally fast metabolism. I chomp on my apple as we pull up to school and peck Ryan's cheek before getting out of the car. I toss my apple in the nearest trash can and continue walking into school. I smile at people as they nod to me and head to my homeroom. I sit at my desk by the window and stare out at the parking lot. As I watch people go by I see him. I didn't think he went to school here. I watch closer and see two boys I do recognize walking with him. I share a few classes with the boy with brown hair. And the smaller, quieter looking kid is in study hall a lot. I keep watching until the two boys enter the school then stare down at my desk. I have to find out more about this Dallas Winston guy. If it's the last thing I do.
--------------------------------------------------When final bell rang I shot out of my class and headed over to Marlene's locker. Most of the Socs leave ten minutes before class ends on last period. It's really funny to watch. You'll see a bunch of kids asking to use the bathroom and then they never come back. I'm surprised the teachers haven't caught on yet.
"Hey." I say to her with an excited smile
"What's got you all hyper?" She asks with a raised eyebrow.
"What do you know about Dallas Winston?" She lets out a snort as she closes her locker and starts walking.
"Just about everything. He steals, he fights, sleeps around. The normal badass type. Why?"
"Well, I'm very interested in him."
"What? Like a crush?"
"No, no. His whole attitude is just very intriguing. I don't know." I say while looking down at the ground. We push open the heavy door and into the sun. Before we can fully get out I realize we hit someone with the door.
"I'm so sorry." I say when we get outside. It's the brunette from this morning!
"Oh, it's fine." He says while rubbing the back of his head.
"Are you sure?" I ask while lightly planting my hand on his shoulder.
"Yeah, but my friend is coming over and he's not too big on Socs."
"So? If he's got a problem with me being here he can just suck it up." I say while putting my hands on my hips. Pony gives my a shocked look that turns into a grin.
"Hey, is this Soc bothering you?" Oh. I look over and come face to face with Dallas once again. I feel Marlene tug at me lightly but I ignore it. I've gotta know if he remembers me. If not the fact of not knowing will eat me alive.
"No, Dal." Pony sighs. Dallas looks at me and his eyes widen a little before returning back to normal.
"Hey, I know you. Your the girl from that Soc restaurant."
"Yeah." I smile sheepishly. I don't like being called a Soc. I'd rather just be a person.
"Samantha, let's go." Marlene says while tugging on my arm.
"Alright. Sorry for hitting you, kid. And nice seeing you again, Dallas." I say before Marlene drags me off of school grounds.
"What the hell?" She asks with he eyes wide.
"What?"
"You didn't tell me you knew Dallas Winston."
"I guess I didn't think it was relevant."
"Well it is if your going to befriend him."
"Who said I was going to do that!?"
"Me. We're going to a party tonight." She says with a devilish grin. I let out a nervous sigh and shake my head. It's going to be a long day.
