Darkest Minds

Darkness is a peculiar aspect of life. No one really knows what might lurk in the shadows, just out of our sight. There could be creatures that we have yet to discover, they could be meaning to do good, or maybe their objective is to harm us.

I would have to say that the darkness creates impossible conclusions in our minds, it creates fears and doubts that we know not to exist, but our minds are clawing at our bodies, telling us to run, for maybe, just maybe, there is something in that mist that we should not go near. Some may try to tell themselves that there is nothing to fear. Other may try to come up with rational explanations, but either way everyone is afraid of something in the darkness.

Some have gone through most of their childhood waking up in the middle of the night, screaming from the nightmare that they have just awoken from, only to sit there in the dark, not wanting to go back to sleep, for they are afraid of something in the room watching them, waiting for them. Under their bed? In the wardrobe? No. In the darkest corner of the room, perhaps staring deep into the blackness, trying to see if a pair of eyes are looking back.

Others will try to get back to sleep, as the nightmare must seem like a better option than the fear that they have whilst they are awake. They cover their heads with the sheets, hoping that if they close their eyes the nightmare will fade and their frightened thoughts will simply disappear.

Whilst the sun shines through the blinds the next morning, their terrible encounter with their own mind is lost in the warming light of the sun's ray's. Any memories of the past night are pushed to the back of their mind, only for them to return at night, when the darkness takes hold of the sun, dragging it down behind the horizon. They will then have to return to the bed of darkest dreams, maybe leaping into their bed rather than walking, as the claws might just grab them from under the bed.

And there are those, who arn't afraid of what's in the shadows, or try not to show it at least. They go through life living a lie, telling that lie to their friends, but the only person who they are lying to is themselves. For as I said...

Everyone is afraid of the dark.
