An Indication of help:
Autumn was gradually becoming weak; it had been I assumed three months- well that is how it felt. I can’t get the concept into my mind that the world has come to this, why has this happened? Nor how myself and Autumn have survived without the full protection of a weapon or a reasonable amount of food and water. If we were lucky enough, sometimes we would come across a can of in-date food or a granola bar, nothing major but something to just keep us going. However now there wasn’t much out there for us until he found us. The Governor.
Autumn and I were scouting for food; stupidly I let her go off on her own. What a mistake that was. I was a few blocks away but I could still hear her screams. I ran as fast as I could towards the building her screams came from, I thought to myself that was it, she had been bitten. I don’t want to have to kill my own sister to stop her from turning, I thought to myself. When I found the building, the double doors were open- which was not a good sign. I didn’t care who heard me, in that moment I needed to find my sister. “Autumn, Autumn sweetie where are you!” I screamed my voice echoing throughout the building, as I found myself nearing towards the second floor. I didn’t care if she was twenty years old, she was still my younger sister and I would always protected her with my heart and soul- she was all that I had left... well actually if he was alive- anyway if calling her sweetie puts me at rest so be it.
I had gotten no reply, I was frightened, and I thought she was dead. “Autumn-” before I could shout anymore I heard a slight moan again. Where it was coming from I did not know. An open window caught my attention. Looking out of the window, the moans were scaling louder, there she was. Autumn was lying against the concrete floor, between two buildings.
I made my way out of the building running towards the alley she was inside of. “Autumn, what happened?” I yelled. I could feel a wet substance down my cheek; I didn’t want to show to Autumn that I was weak. I abruptly wiped the tear away with the sleeve of my shirt. I didn’t want to cry especially in front of her but I never liked seeing my sister in pain or hurt in any way.
“I’m sorry Alela, I tried to jump to the balcony,” she whimpered struggling to point towards the balcony above us.
“And why?” I lifted Autumn’s head lightly, reaching my hand behind her back to help her up.
“I was searching the kitchen cupboards for food, but what I didn’t notice was a party of walkers that were down the corridor, which was my only exit. I thought I could jump this,” she smiled weakly. However as-if on cue the walkers that found Autumn turned the corner to find us both.
“Shit, Autumn this will hurt but we have to go,” I saw her small smile instantly fade. “Look it will be fine,” I sighed not knowing if we were going to be fine. I just wanted some hope, we have had nothing worth living for happen, since this has started- we needed that spark of hope.
I wrapped my arm around Autumn’s waist pulling her into my side, to ease the pain and lift the weight off of her foot. As I could see the struggle with every stride she took. I turned my head slightly, we needed to move and fast, the walkers were not too far behind us and unfortunately we had nothing to improvise as a weapon. A little further down the alley a shopping cart however caught my eye, It wasn’t exactly life saving but it would help. “Right Autumn, I want you to carry on as far as you can, look for somewhere safe to hide. I will try to hold them off,” I had an idea which sounded life saving in my mind but was no doubt ridiculous and time wasting.
“Alela don’t leave me,” she cried. I pulled Autumn into my arms hugging lightly as I didn’t want to hurt her more than she was.
“Please. I’ll be right back I promise,” I watched as my sister limped away, hopefully she would have found somewhere safe if I didn’t make it. As I could no longer see her I ran for the shopping cart nearing the end of the alley. Turning around with the cart the walkers were now picking up their own pace, however before I could complete my actions a buzz was audible from the above. Was what I saw real? A helicopter flew above me, even attracting the walkers, causing their heads to cast wherever the aircraft flew. Taking my only chance I pushed with all force, the shopping cart into the walkers. A few tumbled to the ground whilst the rest behind them brought their attention back to the chaos in front of them.
