~Chapter Three~
The walk home went by rather slow, as Bambi's mind was too over flowed with excitment and scenarios of the party that she hardly paid attention to her surroundings. When neighbors and even strangers waved to her, she hardly came close to even looking at them. A grin was plastered to her face, revealing her crooked front teeth. Her bag bounced a little against her back, and she quitely sung to herself.
'What am I going to wear? Do I have anything that is actually worth putting on? Do I have anything that flatters me? Anything attention grabbing? Do I even own a dress? Will my parents let me go? Will there be alcohol?' Her mind swirled with these questions as she neared her house.
As usual, the old car was parked crookedly in the driveway, a sign that her father drove home drunk again. It was a normal thing to see now, so Bambi hardly paid any attention.
Her father was a heavy drinker. She hardly remembered a day where he was completely sober or not hungover. Niether her or her mother knew why he became that way, and whenever they tried asking him he would always mumble to himself and walk away. So they gave up trying to make him quit, and decided to just live with it. Bambi though, was unhappy with her father's choices, because he no longer wanted to spend any time with her or even have a simple conversation with her, no matter how hard she tried.
As she trudged up the beaten driveway to the door, she heard her parents screaming and yelling at each other. It wasn't uncommon for Bambi to come home to her parents fighting, but this time sounded different. She had never heard them this loud before. With her eyebrows creased together and her bottom lip between her teeth, she slowly opened the door.
Her ears were filled with the screams and horrible names, and the house smelled of burnt food. The lighting was dim, and the usually happy-go-lucky Deuce was huddled in the corner, his tail between his legs and whimpers escaping his mouth. The moment he saw her he skittered over to her side. She immediately felt nauseous with worry.
She had two choices; One, go down to the basement with her dog and wait for the yelling to stop. Or two, go into the kitchen to see what was going on. She wanted to hide away in the dark basement, but her head told her to go check it out.
She swallowed down the lump in her throat and started up the small flight of stairs from the porch, Deuce at her heels. Each step was slow, as she wanted to hear more of it before they saw her.
"You never do anything properly!" Bobby yelled. "Sometimes you make yourself look like a stupid, undereducated housewife!
"I can't believe you are yelling and insulting me just because I burned your god damned food! When was the last time you cooked something for yourself?!" Lucy screamed back, her voice cracking. It was obvious that she was crying, or trying hard not to. "I struggle to work and pay the bills because you are always too lazy and drunk to even find a minimum wage job! And I still have to cook and clean for your sorry ass!"
Bambi swallowed another lump, her heart beating hard against her chest. She crept closer, her hands shaking no matter how much she tried to keep them steady.
"God you are such a bitch, Lucy! I don't even know why I married you in the first place!" Her father's words were surprisingly not slurred together like usual. "I mean, I should have known not to marry my highschool sweetheart! They always seem to turn into worthless pieces of shit!"
