Chapter 1
Tony treaded slowly through the woods, his hands in his pocket, head lowered, following his foot movement with his eyes. He stopped only after he heard something like a branch breaking and quickly scanned the area. Nothing. These were the woods, the place where elements of nature were treated just like him, forgotten. No one ventured towards these woods but him. No one wanted to feel the emptiness the world could have, or even have a little of the knowledge the nothingness could bring to them. Tony didn’t see nothingness, his life, feelings, and future reflected it. There went the head turning break of a branch again that made him stop and look out for who the intruder could be. An animal, he decided, but he knew the woods and the normal sounds. That was not an animal. He glared toward the direction the sound came from and was set to haunt the creature down when the phone rang.
With some annoyance, he shut off his phone and rushed away to answer to his uncle’s call while Veronica stood, frozen in her tracks and stared after his fleeing figure. These were her woods, and nobody could ever venture here but her, she believed. Maybe he was lost, she concluded, before she sat on the warm grass and relaxed to read like she always did. No one to bother her, no noise, just nature and the silence of it. Without a second thought to anything else, she became lost in the world of the novel she was reading.
