Chapter 7

“Were you ok the other day?” she asked as he worked on the problems she set for him.

Isaiah glanced up at her and continued working. “Yes, sorry if I scared you. I space out sometimes.” He didn’t want to say anymore.

A moment of silence followed. “What were you thinking of?” she suddenly asked.

Isaiah tried to give her a little smile before he answered. It pained him to try not to think of it at the moment. When he was around her he could forget it easier.

“Daydreaming. It’s a little embarrassing, but I can tell you about it.”

The reaction on her face was incomparable to anyone’s he’d ever seen. She was completely shocked, her forehead and eyebrows were creased and he could have sworn that he saw her pink lips twitch a little. It didn’t take her very long to get herself together and keep everything on a professional level. “Don’t worry yourself,” she said “just keep working.” As he continued talking, she was in thought. She saw the fear in his eyes the time he spaced out. People simply do not day dream like that.

Isaiah was making progress, but she didn’t take it to her credit. It was solely to his determination to do well, and that intrigued her, looking at his intellectual standing.

He was smart; he had just never tried in the past.

The rain came from nowhere, and he found himself running, not sure if he was trying to get away from it. It was pitch-darkness, so he ran without knowing where the road would lead him or if there would be an end where he would fall, fall till there was no more depth. Till he hit rock bottom. But as he ran, he saw the little glimmer of light; light that was dancing on a water-like surface. There was no possible way that light could be there. There was no moon, no sun, no streetlights, nothing. It was nothingness.

But the glimmer was there nonetheless. It was faint, but he could see it just because of how every other thing was dark. He stopped, though breathing heavily, and approached it. But as he got closer, he began to see the source of the glimmer.

Out of the darkness, she stood, holding a balled fist in the palm of a hand and pressing a thumb to her lips. Her tears glowed, she glowed, and he was only in wonder at how it could be possible. She didn’t see him, she didn’t hear him. She squatted near the river and a tear dropped into the water, the sound of the tear drop, he believed, could have been heard from another continent. It made the water to glow for a few seconds, and she got up, wiped her tears, and looked right at him. Her brown eyes glowed, her caramel skin glowed, and he was sure he had never seen anything more delicate, more beautiful that he imagined she would be gone if he gave her the lighted touch. Veronica. He thought her name before barely whispering it. She spun around as if someone yelled her name. She heard him call out to her. She looked right at him but didn’t see him and before he knew it, she picked up a book from the floor and was gone. The last he saw was a tiny dot of light until it disappeared, out of his sight. Then, the rain stopped, and he found that he, himself, had a tear on his cheek. He wiped it off, a little flabbergasted.

Tony woke up and thought of his odd dream, it was a different dream, and it kept it him up, but he did not have to draw, he was not in pain. But for some reason, it bothered him. She was in his dream. She was crying, and she could not see him but he could see her. He began to wonder about her, but didn’t keep her in his mind too long before he touched the bead he left on the table. And when he looked at it, the oddest thing happened. The bead reflected some light from the moon, and he remembered her tears.

But he had learned a lot about Veronica, a lot she did not know he did.
