Zadies POV:

A hard body slammed into mine and I stumbled back a few steps. Arms were wrapped around me, and my feet were hovering a few feet above the ground as somebody lifted me in the air. Panic strangled me and I was a few seconds away from a scream.

“Holy shit!” A breathless Ricky shouted into my ear. I laughed as he set me back down and took a deep breath to calm myself down.

“That was so amazing!” I congratulated him and squeezed his arm, a huge smile plastered on both of our faces. The nerves from earlier had obviously disappeared and left in place a thrilled boy.

“That was so crazy, Zade…” He grinned. I was so happy for him. I’d seen Ricky happy plenty of times, but this was something different. The look on his face, pure exhilaration and joy.

“I’m so proud of you.” And I was. This was a huge step for King the Kid, and he’d been such an amazing performer. I knew the crowd had loved them too, based on the cheers after every song.

I looked around and saw Jose, David, Erin and Chloe standing a few feet away, excitement evident on all their faces too. David was talking, flailing his arms every which way.

“…and I was like ‘shit there’s a lot of people’. You should’ve seen it from up there, damn.” David rambled with a dazed look. Erin laughed beside him and shook her head as Jose opened the dressing room door.

Ricky, David and Jose fell onto the couches, laughing with each other as they retold stories about what happened on stage. Chloe tosses each one a water bottle, and they chugged them quickly.  I caught her eye as she sat down on the couch opposite me and she winked, and I grinned at her. I was thrilled for the guys, and thrilled this night had been a success, for all of us. Chloe, Erin and I had laughed a lot while we watched them, and lets just say I felt pretty upbeat.

A knock on the door interrupted our talk, and a bald man stuck his head in. “Sorry to interrupt, but there’s some people who want to talk to you.”

“See us?” Jose asked and the man nodded, an annoyed look evident on his face. His annoyance was killing my mood.

“Yeah, you.”

“Okay…” Ricky, Jose and David sent confused looks at each other as the door was pushed open further.

A red-faced man filled up the entryway. He was tall and wide with an intimidating look. By his facial features, he was older, but it wasn’t plain in his appearance, since he wore jeans and a sweatshirt over a dress shirt.

His face transformed into a smile, and I smiled in return. There was something happy about him; his presence automatically lightened the tension filled mood his appearance had created before he’d smiled.

“Hello, boys. My names’ Paul Higgins.” The name sounded familiar, but I couldn’t put my finger on it. Wasn’t there a guy in the Plain White T’s named Paul Higgins?

“That’s Ricky, Jose, and I’m David.” David pointed at each of them before motioning to himself. He caught Erin’s eye and hurriedly said “Oh, and these are our friends, Erin, Chloe and Zadie.”

“Nice to meet you, ladies. Zadie’s such an interesting name. Haven’t heard it before.” I notice his thick Irish accent and my curiosity is piqued. He seems like a pretty nice guy, though, so I give him a sweet smile before answering him.

“I get that a lot. There’s actually an author named Zadie Smith, and my mom loves her work, so I got the fallout.”

“Well, it’s a lovely name.” He nods his head at the compliment and my smile – and mood – widens. I’m not usually one who takes compliments easily, but I can tell he’s genuine.

“Well, thank you.”

He turns his attention back to the boys, who I realize along with Chloe and Erin have been watching our encounter with wrinkled eyebrows.

“Sorry, anyways, I watched you boys play and I have to say you’re pretty talented. How long have you been playing?” Paul questions. A chorus of thank you’s goes around before Ricky answers.

“Not long, actually, this is our first gig in the city. It’s pretty crazy.” He laughs and Paul chuckles along with him.

I was really curious now, and I could tell Erin and Chloe were too. They were still sitting on the couches and exchanged confused looks at one another while Paul and the boys talked a little more about their playing experience.

I was pretty convinced this was the beginning of a record deal or something. Granted, I’ve never been anywhere near the music business, this was as close as my life had gotten to crazy shit like that. But I’d never have prepared myself for the next thing to come out of his merry mouth.

“Well boys, I’m the manager for One Direction, one of the biggest bands in the country, and if all goes well I’d like for you to join us on tour.”

And welcome to the crazy.
