The next day momma took me to the Greenbow County School because she wanted me to have a very fine education, momma met the principal, “Mrs Gump, your boy is different” “We are all different” momma replied “The state IQ requires a minimal IQ of 80, your boy Forrest is right here” he said pointing with a pencil just below the state IQ “Your boy is gonna have to go to a special school” momma was disappointed that I wouldn’t get to have the rights of other children just because of my condition “He might be a little on the slow side, but my boy Forrest is gonna get the same opportunity as everybody else, he isn’t going to a special school to re-tread tyres” Persuaded by momma’s opinion I was accepted into the school and later that night I sat on my tyre swing thinking what it would be like to attend that school.
The next morning momma woke me up to get ready for school, she packed my lunch while I brushed my teeth, combed my hair and and washed my hands, I made my way down to the end of the street and waited for the bus to come and within 10mins it was on its way, I said goodbye to momma and made my way to the bus, before the bus steps I stopped and paused and the bus driver who was a lady asked “Are you coming or not?” “Momma said its not good to take rides with strangers” “This is the bus to go to school” “I’m Forrest, Forrest Gump”and she replied with a smile “I’m Dorothy Harrison” “Well now we ain’t strangers anymore” and I hopped into the bus and tried to find my seat each empty seat with someone on it always said “Taken” I made my way to the next seat “Seats taken” then I made my way to the next seat “You can’t sit here” I stood there looking at the ground until I thought I heard the most beautiful voice I’ve ever heard.
“You can sit here if you want” I looked at her, she was the most beautiful thing I’ve ever seen “Well aren’t you gonna sit down or aren’t you?” I sat down next to her and it was silent for the next minute until she asked me a question, the only person who asked me questions was momma “Whats wrong with your legs?” and I replied “Nothing wrong, thank you, my legs are just fine and dandy, momma says my leg is crooked like a question mark” and she asked for the second time “Are you stupid or something?” “Momma says ‘Stupid is- is stupid does’ and she finally said her name “I’m Jenny” “I’m Forrest, Forrest Gump” and we shook hands and from that moment on we was just like peas and carrots, everyday we would hang out in a tree, she taught me how to read, I taught her how to hang from a tree, some nights we would sit on the tree and wait till the stars come out.
For some reason Jenny never seemed to want to go home “Jenny, momma’s gonna worry about me” “Just stay a little longer” she said holding my hand “Ok Jenny I’ll stay” I smiled at her, she was my best friend, my only friend. Later Jenny eventually went home and I laid in bed looking at the ceiling while momma was reading me a story. The next day when coming home from school with Jenny, 3 bullies were chasing forrest with bikes while Jenny and Forrest were talking one of the boys threw a rock at Forrest causing him to have a cut on his head “RUN FORREST RUN!” I Ran because I was afraid they were going to hit me with rocks again, I tried so hard to run but with these braces on my legs I kept looking back and they were right behind me all I could hear was Jenny screaming “RUN FORREST RUN!”
