Kryptonite
(Chapter 7)
I was surrounded by dark when I woke but I could feel something hard thumping my chest. I just wanted to sleep I tried to tell whoever it was to go away but strangely I couldn't seem to make my body work right. I could feel pain as my skin scraped against something hard underneath me and felt a rough cough shake my body as I spit salty water out. I gasped for air as I opened my eyes and blinked upwards. My eyes were bleary and stung so I shut them trying to ease the pain.
"Kairi" I heard my name shouted frantically. My eyes popped open at the sound of his voice, Erik's. As my eyes focused on his face everything came back to me, including my near death experience. I smiled up at Erik as he stood to give me room and then I took in the rest of my surroundings. It was so dark here. I couldn't figure it out. Had I been unconscious for that long? As my eyes adjusted I realized we were in a cave, an underwater one apparently but strangely I wasn't frightened. I felt his eyes on me so I turned and saw him standing over me.
"What were you thinking" he shouted his voice bouncing around the cave. I could hear the sounds of the storm as it raged outside. Slowly everything came back to me. I didn't answer him too ashamed of the way I had acted so foolishly going out in the storm.
"You nearly killed yourself with that little stunt out there, so I had to save you and you nearly stopped that too" he said his face flushing slightly which made me remember the way I had reacted to his lips on mine. I was so embarrassed I couldn't look at him.
He reached down and slowly brought my head up so that my eyes could not escape his and said "What would I have done if I had lost you." I was so shocked by his words I couldn't reply. If he lost me, what did he mean by that? Hadn't he made it clear on the beach that he didn't care for me the way I did him?
"Are you okay" he asked finally pulling away in a hoarse worried voice. I merely nodded unable to speak as I finally really looked at him. He wasn't wearing a shirt, just board shorts. As my eyes roved over him I realized and there was something wrong or not normal with his sides. There were these bumps there but I couldn't figure out what they were. Then recognition dawned on me. I had seen something like them before only never on a human. I stood up cautiously and reached out my hand toward them. Erik took a step back looking startled. I paused to take in his reaction but continued onward determined to test my suspicions. He seemed to consider me for a moment and then seemed resigned. I continued onward till I felt his stomach hard under my hands. I felt a shiver run through him and as I slipped my hands to the side and ran them over the bumps I had seen. I felt the ridges as my hand glided over them and they moved slightly exposing slits into his flesh. My theory was proven correct, they were gills. I looked at him in wonder and he looked down at me with a worried expression on his face. What was he I wondered?
"I can't stand it" he said "what are you thinking?" Would he want to hear what I was thinking?
"Are you" I hesitated not wanting to finish what I had started to say but at Erik's impatient look continued "are you a mermaid or merman rather?" My voice had grown quiet as I said this and trailed off to a whisper on the last word so I wondered if he had heard it. To my intense surprise and annoyance he doubled over and started howling with laughter.
"What's so funny" I asked him regaining my voice as I filled with indignation. He had wanted to know what I was thinking.
"How original" he laughed "it's not like we haven't heard that before." What was he talking about? What an infuriating man or... whatever he was.
At my angry look he calmed down a little and while walking over to pick up a stick said "no I am not a merman though my kind has been called that before or rather we kind of started the whole merpeople thing when someone saw one of us so maybe you would call us mermen" he contradicted with a frown. "At any rate we're really nothing similar to those mythical creatures you hear about in books. See no fin" he said wiggling his toes as he lighted the stick which I now realized was in fact a torch.
