The reason he is so hellbent on killing Ricarda [Lady_Ricarda] he failed to do so in a dark alley on December the 23rd, 1888. Leaving him obsessed with hunting her down and atoning for his failure.
Instead of killing her, he wakes up the next morning in the same alley, with his coat missing. And his humanity turned back on, and he is only able to think of one thing: "I have to find that woman again. I think I love her..."
