No one can make you feel inferior without your consent -Eleanor Roosevelt
Most people don't remember their first day of school. I don't mean you starting elementary school and walking into your kindergarten class, and your only there for half of the day. I'm talking about preschool. Yes preschool where you were allowed to nap during the day and you could mix all of the colors together, paint it on a piece of paper and have your teachers praising on the beautiful artwork you had created. Life was easy for a three year old soon to be famous artist.
My preschool was me trying to hide my ability from the teachers and my fellow classmates, and yes I did say ability. In life we have your supernatural creatures living among us. Your most likely sitting next to one right now, but that's not the main point. Where I live we have two main high schools; one for creatures and one for the humans. I go to Hallman's High School which is for the supernatural creatures. We have your witches, tricksters, werewolves, jinxes, any creature you can think of. For myself, I'm a illusionist. We're simplest creatures you'll ever come across. We can read minds and create illusions base off of what we got from a person. For example, if I were to create a spider in front of an arachnophobic, not only would I create a nightmare for them, but also use a fear against them. Your goals in life, dreams, likes dislikes, anything and everything in your life could be used as a weapon against you.
Creatures are afraid of us and humans don't know that they're living with creatures because their too wrapped up in their own little worlds. My people, we can see why other creatures despise us. Illusionist are literal walking weapons. Then came this time period of wars and battles. Neighbors were turning against each other. My people were forced into hiding, and by that I mean someone thought it would be a smart idea for all of us illusionist to go into the woods and stay there. We wouldn't leave those woods for years. We kept that lifestyle for years. I actually think that guy had a atrocious run in with jinx before and his life went downhill from that.
Fast forward many years to the day my parents had met.
My lovely parents had a theory that we illusionist could still fit in with creatures and live among them. A year later after my parents got married, my mom got a visit from that lovely Mr. Stork and 9 months after that I came along. Jasmine Marie Hilman. When I actually started going to schools I was three. Started off in preschool and now I'm on my Junior year of high school. I may have been to only three different high schools, but trust me it's not pretty when people find out they've been going to school with a illusionist. It took weeks before some of the burns from my last school healed up. Most illusionist get home school because their parents want to have their children to stay alive for their next birthday.
You all must be wondering who do I hangout with at school? With this new school, it's going to be no one. I would always try to make friends at the past schools, but that would always lead to them finding out that I'm a illusionist from my parents. Logically speaking, if I don't talk to people this year my parents won't have to tell anyone that I'm a illusionist and they can't control who I hangout with at school. Hallman's High School will be my fourth high school, and according to the elders they said that in Chinese culture four is considered to be an unlucky number, and that it basically means death. What a great way to start off your first day of high school at your fourth school. Now I'm starting to wonder if that jinxed illusionist was one of my ancestors. All I really want is my parents to start realizing that illusionist will never be accepted by the other creatures.
"Ready?" Dad asked. I stared out the car window as students climbed the steps of the high school. It must be easy for those students. They're able to go to school with peers that accept them and not have to worry about hiding anything, or tell the same lie to the people they would consider friends. "You remember the drill?" My attention was brought to my dad. His dark hair was starting to grey, and the sea green eyes that I had inherited from him were starting to dull, almost like they were losing life. Is he just as tired of this whole "conquest to fit in" like I'm tired of it? As for the drill, he means that I would try to make friends with the other creatures in hope that I would fit in and they won't be afraid of the illusionist side of me. To answer his question, yes I do know the drill, but that doesn't mean I'm going to follow it.
"Yeah dad. I'll make a dragon the size of Burj Khalifa and have it breath rainbows and poop out candy." I said with sarcasm dripping out of my mouth.
"I want candy!" My little brother yelled. As my dad gave that, oh so familiar tired look, my attention went back out the window. Two story building covered with red bricks and classroom windows. White columns held up an overhang that had white stairs leading to the main entrance.
"Why can't we just let them believe the lies?" Many students walked up the stairs, finding their friends to talk about what happened to them over the weekend and the latest gossip.
"Do you want people to still fear our kind?" Jasmine isn't here right now to answer the question, please leave a message.
Of course I want people to accept us. I just don't want to be risking my life to prove that all illusionist aren't all bad. I'm sure they're many different ways to prove that now. Instead of answering my dad's question, I got out of our old beaten car in hope to join or maybe disappear in the crowd of students.
"Good luck Jazzy!" I turn around to see my brother sticking his head, not only out of the opened window, but also duplicate of head out of the passenger side window which he was seated behind.
"Nat!" I hissed while trying to discreetly point out the illusion. When a illusionist turns 8, they get their abilities. The parents and elders help the group of new illusionist to control their new powers. When you get older, your powers mature with you. From the ages of 18-20, that's when one usually reaches full potential with their powers. All you have left to do is learn tricks.
The reason why we'll get exposed and killed will be because of my own brother Nat. He'll go out into public one day with someone and out of nowhere he'll make a dinosaur with butterfly wings appear.
"Jazz, I got your brother. You go inside. we don't need you to be late to class on your first day." No need to remind me dad. I turned around and headed into the school with the few stragglers that were left.
The fourth school. My unlucky one.
