Ch. 1 Just like that everything changes

Tonight is New Years and I have to prepare to be around him. Someone who was once my best friend. I was closer to him than I had been to Maya. Then two years ago today my mom was heading back from the store and a drunk driver hit her. Her car flipped and hit a tree. She was declared dead at the hospital. I called him and called him. But he never showed up to my bay window and never called back. He said he would always be there for me but he wasn't. I didn't see him until we started school. He had a few bruises and stopped wearing turtlenecks. I could barely recognize him anymore. He wasn't the Farkle I knew anymore. He had changed more than he had in the 8th grade when he had Billy Ross bullying him. He let me in then. Now it was like I was invisible. And I didn't understand why. And I still don't. And now he is coming tonight and I will be ambushed with memories of how we used to be. But everything has changed. I am dressing up a bit. He may have hurt me more than he will ever know. But he is still the boy that has had my heart since we were about 4 years old. Now he is turning 18 in April but that doesn't change a thing. We have known each other for nearly 14 years we need to stop acting like strangers.

Later
The door bell rings and Dad calls Auggie and me. "Well here goes something." I mutter to myself as I leave the room and go to the living room where the former Mrs. Minkus and Farkle were standing. Auggie who loves Topanga goes and gives her a hug. "Oh hey Auggie how are you?" She says and he smiles. "Good." I look at Farkle who is looking at me. But when he notices I had noticed he looks down. He looks miserable I wonder if he feels sorry for breaking up our friendship. Then Dad turns on the music and Uncle Shawn and his wife Kathy walk in with Maya. Who had brought both of her boyfriends. She hasn't yet decided who she loved more yet so she is dating both uncle Josh and Lucas. Don't ask me how she got them to agree to that I still dont have a clue. Then the new years Eve party really begins.
Later
It's two minutes to midnight and i make my way over to Farkle to talk to him at last. "Everyone I would like to announce that Topanga and I are back together and are engaged!" My dad announces smiling like a fool. And Farkle's mom kisses him while showing off her ring. Mostly everyone cheers. I look at Farkle. He is the only one that looks as shocked as I feel. Why does everything have to change just like that?! Farkle he has to be my stepbrother? Why?! I could never love him like a brother!! I freak out as it goes dark.

Later
I open my eyes and it's early morning. And I am in my room. I don't remember anything after my dad's engagement announcement. I just feel like everything is going wrong. I wanted to know if I could get back what I once had with Farkle and then figure out if we could me something more. But not this no not this. Suddenly my door opens and Auggie jumps on my bed and lands on me. "Uh! Auggie get off!" He slides off but stays on the bed. "Are you okay? You scared Dad and Farkle." He says. "I scared Dad and Farkle?" I ask and Auggie nods. "Yeah Farkle caught you too. And once it came out that you were okay just fainted he carried you to your room." "He did?" "Yeah. Why so surprised he is your best friend. And your Ava." He says somehow knowing how I feel. "Was my best friend. And how do you know that he is to me what Ava is to you?" I ask. "Just because I'm ten.." "Almost ten." I tell him. "Whatever. Just cause I'm almost ten doesn't mean I'm stupid or blind. You look at him the way I look at Ava. Or how Uncle Shawn looks at Kathy. It's all the same." "But what can I do about it? His mom is marrying our Dad." "I don't know Riley. Just do what feels right I guess." He says giving me a hug before leaving the room. I sigh. Just what are they teaching in the fourth grade now a days?

A few weeks later
Apparently Dad and Topanga have been planning this a lot longer than when they decided to let the rest of us know about it. Cause I've been to a few dress fittings with Maya and her mom Kathy. And Topanga already had her dress all picked out already she just needed to have a few more fittings. The colors are Red Blue silver and black. Which is interesting. My bridesmaids dress will be Red, Maya's will be blue and Kathy's will be black. And Ava who will be a flower girl is wearing cream. Like she had at Uncle Shawn and Kathy's wedding. And Auggie will be the ring bearer. i am getting tired of all this running around.
A week later
It's the rehearsal dinner and I am wearing a purple semiformal dress. Maya is wearing Black and her mother is wearing green. I'm feeling slightly awkward since they paired me with Farkle though I am kinda glad at the same time. We really really need to talk. We haven't said much to each other. And now we are going over the bridal party dance. Which is going to combine classical, sensual, and modern dance all together. Help me. This is going to make me want to do more than just talk to Farkle a whole heck of a lot more.
