The stage was pitch dark, leaving only a spot of light, only one chance to shine. Only a couple of feet were separating me from the crowd. It's only me against the world, I thought.
I stepped into the light, here goes nothing.
" 'Cause when, when the fire's at my feet again", my voice rang in my own ears,
"And the vultures all start circling," I sang, more like whispered,
"Louder, Lexie" he said.
But I couldn't. My hands held the microphone so tightly my knuckles were turning white.
"They're whispering, you're out of time" I continued. I could do this. I could win this. I had to at least try.
"You can do this, Lex. We all believe in you." he repeated.
This is my time, I thought, I earned this.
And that was when my true voice came out, my inner voice, a mixture of pain and happiness, a complicated compromise.
And I sang, loudly and fearlessly,
"But still, I rise".
