"So, are you and Jacob back together?" August asks.
"No. He apologized and we talked. I told him I do want to be friends, not for our benefit, or to see if it will go anywhere, but for the kids. I don't want them to have parents that can't stand each other." I answer.
"Oh."
"Why? Jealous?" I tease. It's pretty obvious that August has a small crush on me, he told me once when he got drunk. It's okay though, he knows I'm not looking for a relationship right now, so he never brings it up. I'm thankful for that, I'm glad he's just being my friend.
"Neva'." He chuckles. "He ain't got a thing on this." He gestures to himself.
"Cocky much?"
"What do that mean, mommy?" JJ asks.
"It means he thinks he's all that." I answer.
"And a bag of chips?" Rose asks.
"And a drink." I laugh.
The kids laugh and August glares at me. "I do not."
"Sure, Aug." I nod, not believing him.
"Keep it up, I'mma kick yo'-" He starts to curse, but remembers there are children in the car. "butt."
"Ha, love to see you try." I joke.
"Whateva'." He chuckles.
"Mommy!" JJ yells.
"Hush, JJ. What do you need?" I ask.
"Can we go see TiTi Zoe?" He asks.
"I have to drop August off first." I tell him.
"I'll go witcha." August says.
"Are you sure?"
"Yeah, Ray and them coo' folks." He nods.
"Okay." I shrug, cutting my blinker on.
We make it to Zoe's in ten minutes. I help JJ and Rose out then grab Mae-Lynn's car seat. August grabs Aiden's and we go inside with the kids. "Here comes best friend." Zoe smiles, waiting til' I set the car seat down beside the couch to hug me.
"Hey." I smile.
"And Mr. August." She hugs him next.
"Wassup, Zoe?"
"Nothing at all. I was about to make lunch for the twins. Want anything?" She asks us.
"I'm fine. I'll help cook."
"What are you makin'?" August asks.
"Grilled cheese."
"Then yes please." He smiles.
"Will you come get me if they wake up?" I ask August, who nods and daps Ray, who had just came downstairs.
I go to the kitchen with Zoe. "So, August still filling in for Jake?" She asks. She likes August, but she doesn't think I should get with him. At least not yet.
"No, he's just being a friend. That's like asking if you're filling in for Jacob." I roll my eyes playfully.
"I'm just saying-" I cut her off.
"I know. I'm not looking for a relationship now anyway, he knows that." I shrug.
"Does he?"
"What do you mean, Zoe?" I sigh, pulling my hair back.
"The way he looks at you." She answers.
"What about it?"
"He looks at you as more than just a friend."
